Greetings from California

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Now then - currently sitting in an internet caff in San Luis Obispo, starved of Toon/Footy/UK news for..my God, it's only been four days. What's new then? I read about O'Brien. And what's this about Larent Robert (?) ? S'pose I should look through last few days postings really. If you're about, say hello...I'll only be on line for an hour or so. And yes, it's sunny.

Hey there Dan. I'm still recovering from watching the England game - 2-1 if you hadn't heard, but tight, even exhausting.

San Luis Obispo? I've been there - is it near Hearst Castle, sort of between San F. and LA?

Hi clarky - 2-1? Blimey, better go and check out Sprouting Life site. Yep, just south of Hearst Castle, we went there last night. Extraordinary place.

Incredible place - totally kitsch. Actually i thought it was staggering waste of money, but what do I know? I enjoyed the tour - canny pool? I stayed at a place called Moonlight Beach, I believe. Beach stacked high with driftwood, kinda weird, actually -it was feezing and bloody windy. I think that's a great part of the world though.

What you doing there - holiday?

Nowt much happening Toon-wise. AS has been to Vail CO to see a world expert on knee injuries - says he needs to rest it for at least 4 weeks. Transfer deadline day passed without 'incident'.
Rumours abound ref comings and goings - Laurent Roberts only one of many.
The mackems from RTG have invaded the BBS - Buff and I are trying to persuade everyone to ignore them.

Hi Dan, I will assume the weather in San Luis Obispo is a little better than we have up here, indeed a lot better. Anyway enjoy it, soon it will be mudslide season there, and then of course the brush fires. See, a little bit of snow isn't so bad after all ;-))

Is SL Obispo the town beside a funny single hill that sticks up right beside the sea, Dan?

Got to go Dan - enjoy your trip.

Ta - back up the coast now...

Well, it's sunny here in MN as well, but methinks the temp might just be a tad colder than in CA. It was bliddy freezin' last night walking back from the pub. I swear my blood would have frozen had I not had the sense to dilute it with alchohol.

Saw a prog on the Hearst Castle on TV this week. Patti (sorry, Patricia) Hearst was hosting it and showing "us all" round the place. You'd have thoiught with aal that money they spent they'd have built a footy pitch as well.

Enjoy yersel' Dan. I'll keep a look out for you in this lil' ol' country.

Yep clarky, it and Morro Island is where they filmed "The Goonies". I lived in Fresno for a while and that was our "day at the beach"

Thanks Gus. I visited the site of James Dean's death (in a Porsche I believe) not too far from there - actually slightly inland - and found it strangely atmospheric.
For an area fairly close to LA and SF, that area is relatively isolated, unspoiled and wild, and rather nice actually - if not what most people would associate with California.

Hi Dan. I think that's the place where they eat San Luis Obispo Turkey Balls, isn't it? Let us know what they taste like. Plus there's a motel called the Madonna Inn, which out-kitsches the Hearst Castle. Every room's done up after some theme such as Snow White or Lancelot, etc. And the restaurant is done out in pink leather. Worth staying for one night, but better if your colour blind and tasteless.

Plus isn't Big Sur round there too? Where the Beach Boys did a big concert? And Zabriskie Point too? And Monterey. And Clint Eastwood and the Hog's Breath Inn. Pebble Beach. Cypress Point. Great place to spend some time.

Yes. I've driven Big Sur twice, and in general found it a little disappointing, other than a few specific viewpoints. The Monterey Peninsular is very nice, especially for golf lovers - Pebble Beach, Cypress Point, Spyglass and several other great courses.
There's Cannery Row for Steinbeck officianados, and Carmel which is a lovely little town, with a visit to Clint Eastwood's Hogsbreath Inn essential. Clint apparently does frequently eat there, but we didn't see him - although a waiter with a false fore-arm complete with hook, did get our kids attention. The burger and chips there is fantastic.

Last time I went there I also drove north of SF into the wine district, and further on to the giant redwood forests in the far north of CA, which were breathtaking - especially in a place called Humboldt State Park near Eureka. If anyone gets the chance, don't miss this place.
Oh, what memories, must go back soon.

Not far from the intersection of the accident is a small monument. A sort of chrome barrier around a tree and if my memory is correct a shop come off license and then nothing else for 100 miles!!

We only went that way to see the monument too!!
