3 points, but good grief it was hard work - Finland played well and made it really hard. I'm exhausted!

I thought defensively we were fairly poor with the two CB's strangely hesitant at times and not really gelling well together. Gary Neville did OK despite his og, and made the 1st goal brilliantly, but I thought Chris Powell looked a little out of his depth today.

In midfield we huffed and puffed and worked very hard, but were 2nd best for uncomfortable spells - never really getting to grips with Litmanen who was excellent. Scholes wasn't able to get forward as much as usual, and this denied us his ability to link with the front two.

Our passing was erratic, and we gave the ball away too much to exert any measure of control, and the last 5 minutes were agony as we dropped deeper and deeper.

Gerrard did OK, but actually can play a lot better than this. MacManamanamanaman was very in & out although he was involved in the build up for the 2nd goal. I thought Becks had one of his better games for England, worked really hard, and could have had a couple more goals.

Up front I didn't think Cole and Owen linked very well, although again they both ran their socks off. I still can't believe Andy Cole missed the chance to make it 3-1 late in the game, even though it came on his left foot, but I'd persevere with him.

A very important victory, which keeps our hopes alive. Onward to Albania, where another 3 points would now give us a real chance of salvaging qualification. Well done lads, and well done the Anfield crowd for their whole-hearted support.

Is Radio 5 also covering the Rep Ireland match? They've still got a web blackout on nearly 2hrs after the England match finished. Waaah...was hoping to hear the Ireland match. Can't get RTE's stream to work. grrrr. Ah well. Good to hear England won, and Ireland doing well so far. up by 2 at half time. Shay keeping his sheets clean so far!

It was exhausting game. Generally, England looked much much better on second half. I spotted one black and white shirt in the audience.

Why does R5 & BBC bother with Ireland matches, it's a foreign country, I'm as interested in them as France Belgium & Holland. They should pay more attention to other British teams after all who pays the licence fee!

I have to say I entirely agree with you Dave. If the BBC are to cover football nations other than the home countries, they should be covering nations offering the very best standard of football possible - and that certainly isn't Eire.

I meant Albania

So we aren't interested in Shay Given and Andy O'Brien future International team? I like to know how all the European teams are doing.

Flights to/fm Ireland/UK are considered domestic, and there's lots of Irish in England that might be interested in knowing how their team is doing. Especially when that win has kept their hopes of qualifying alive.

That's as may be ciara, but Eire is not part of the UK. There are also lots of Germans, Frogs, Italians, Dutch, Scandinavians etc, etc living in the UK but they don't get similar benefits.

From a personal perspective, I have not the remotest interest in the fortunes of the Republic of Ireleand, and would rather watch Spain, France, Germany, Holland or Italy any day of the week.

The bottom line is that coverage of the Republic is cheap, and therefore seen as an acceptable use of our licence fee - I certainly don't agree with that premise.

There's a fair number of newts and toads as well Clarky and they don't get special broadcasts either ;-)

...you must mean the toads who live on the Wear?
Blerks who come from Blyth are usually "as newts" aren't they?

Well for those of you who may be interested in the Dutch they, unsuprisingly, crushed Andorra 5-0 in the largely empty Barcelona reserves stadium. The real interest was how Van Gaal would play leading up to Wednesday's crucial game away against Portugal. He went for wingers with Kluivert and Hasselbaink up front. Both scored but Hasselbank always looks a little out of his depth when playing for his country and yesterday was no exception. Zenden did well on the right but Overmars struggled down the left. Pierre Van Hooijdonk (now playing for Benfica) came off the bench and got a couple, Stam got booked. Considering they had a postman on his own up front I thought Andorra did ok to keep the score semi-respectable. Better than my adopted Dutch side Sparta who got hammered 9-0 by Ajax last week.

Team: v/d Saar, Bosvelt, Stam, F. De Boer, Coco, Overmars, Davids, van Bommel, Zenden, Kluivert, Hasselbank
