MAG: MORE BLAME CLINTON THAN BUSH FOR DOWNTURN; ONLY 1 IN 3 WOULD INVEST $1,000 IN STOCK MARKET, IF THEY HAD IT 3/23/01

New York --Only one-third (35%) of Americans would now invest $1000 in the stock market if they had it, according to Americans polled this week by TIME magazine and CNN. (More (60%) say it would be a "bad idea.") TIME magazine released poll results about the economy late Friday afternoon.

President George W. Bush's occasional remarks that the economy may be headed toward recession "are affecting the economy," according to three in five Americans (58%; 38% don't think so). But most Americans believe that Bill Clinton is more responsible than Bush for current economic conditions (59% say Clinton, 23% say Bush).

Nearly half (46%) say the stock market decline has made them feel worried "about their own financial future" and their ability to "save enough for their retirement." At least one-in-four report because of the downturn they have decided NOT to spend to purchase a car (20%), go on vacation (24%), and go out for dinner as often (22%).

Pessimists outnumber optimists with 49 percent predicting a recession is likely during the next 12 months (41% say unlikely).

On other financial topics, Alan Greenspan: Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan is still popular with the public: favorable views outweigh unfavorable views by nearly three-to- one (47% favorable to 16% unfavorable).
