PurpleHaze - thoughts on defense

Denny's first major free agent signing was done this week by adding veteran tight end Byron Chamberlain from the Broncos. Chamberlain signed a one year deal. The 6-1 242 pound Chamberlain played in the shadow of Shannon Sharp until last season and is regarded as the premier pass-catching tight end on the free agent market. So now Culpepper has yet another pass option but no running game.

Don't get me wrong here, I'm glad we have the most dominating offense in the league, however, what about the defense! The most glaring need of this team is on defense. Last seasons Super Bowl should have tipped Green off that offense is good but defense wins championships. We will once again go to the playoffs but lose if the defense does not improve through free agency and the draft. We can no longer count on great offensive production to get us to the Super Bowl. Green will have to change his philosophy and draft defense and look at the remaining defense that is available on the free agent market.

Next week we will look at the available defensive player in the draft. Green will almost certainly take a running back with the Vikes first round selection but the defensive selections are there and we could find some steals even in the later rounds.

See you next week for more on the draft and any free agent signings.
