I wonder if CannotTell will judge the posting of this article to be crypto-racism?

Yes, Lars. It is.

It states loudly and clearly "Look, blacks are having problems with hispanics moving in, therefore, blacks are rascists, too". Which allows me again, at the end of this day, to say I HATE NIGGERS.

Somehow I knew you'd say that.

Hispanics in South

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate crimes in the U.S., has documented more than 20 protests against immigrants in the region during the last two years.

Living in SoCal this thread is worth a chuckle and a DUH.

FS, you are still misspelling "racist". What's the deal?

-- Lars (larsguy@yahoo.com), March 22, 2001.

The term Hispanic is too broad of a category. I have hispanic friends who look about as European as you can get. On the other hand many of the people working in McDonalds are dark and more Mayan appearing. Maybe we should just classify everyone who speaks English as Englanders.

The term "Hispanic" refers to an ethnic, not a racial, category. It encompasses everyone who has their roots in a Spanish-speaking country. You can be any color and be Hispanic, from Javier Lopez to Cameron Diaz.

The word "Hispanic", was coined after the 1980 census. IMO, it is somewhat of a weasel word. It means what you want it to mean.

If Hispanics are those that come from Spsnish speaking countries, then they can be racially pure African, pure European, pure American Indian, or any combination there of. There are even Asian Hispanics (the President of Peru for example).

Residents of Brazil are not "Hispanics" because they speak Portuguese, not Spanish. I guess we must call them Latinos (or maybe even Brazilians).

I have heard (can't cite references) that, increasingly, those of Mexican heritage in this country don't want to be called "Hispanics". They prefer "Mexican-American". Makes sense to me---culturally, Mexicans don't have much in common with Puerto Ricans, etc. Racially, Mexicans are often nearly pure Indian (Mayan, Aztec, many more). I don't think many Africans ever made it to Mexico. Apparently no demand for slave labor there.

Yes, exactly Lars. It's a catch-all phrase. Venezuelans are nothing like Cubans, who are nothing like Castillians, who are nothing like Argentians, yada yada yada.
