Cost of living up for Canadians

It cost more to live in Canada last month with Canadians paying almost 3 per cent more for goods and services. The Consumer Price Index notes higher prices for food and energy were major factors in the jump. But excluding the impact of energy prices, the index rose 2.4 per cent in February, the highest 12-month advance since late 1995. More than half the increase in the food index goes toward fresh vegetables, beef, and restaurant meals. Higher energy costs are one factor, bad weather in southern growing regions is another. BC helped keep the lid on the national average for energy prices, the province's hydro rebate is attributed with a decline in the electricity index.
