What about O'Brien and Quinn?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Heya guys,

Long time no see. Don't know if any of the old lads is still here, Rik i know but anyone else? Of course I have been following the team very closely and now I feel I have to talk to someone about the last results. They are breaking my heart!

Anyway, this talk about buying Rivaldo and stuff. Ok, sounds great if it's true. But what about these guys Quinn and O'Brien? Are they any good. I live in Sweden so I don't get to see Newcastle play so I have no idea if the are future big players or just squad players.

Nice to be back!

Welcome back Sudden.

Quinn and O'Brien? I really have no idea. I've seen Quinn once and he looked like he lacked pace. O'Brien I've never seen (or noticed). Depressing isn't it?

Still can't see the merit in signing O'Brien. It's not a reflection on him but with Gary Caldwell possibly making his International U21's debut on Friday night I would have thought this was the perfect opportunity to see what he could do before signing an established centre back in the summer.

If O'Brien turns out to be an amazing defender then fair enough but we'll have to wait and see. Obviously Robson has seen Caldwell Jnr many times for the reserves to he musn't rate him that much or doesn't believe in giving him experience.

Whenever any of the young lads has come in this year they have not let us down.

Heya Geordie!

O'Brien haven't played for Newcastle yet I understand. But I have never heard of him before. Anyway, there are some other players I wonder about also. Any comments on these guys:

Bassedas, Acuna, Glass, Lua-Lua, Bovin and Gavilan.

Bassedas - Has rarely played in his preferred position and has more often than not been played on the left of midfield.

Acuna - Probably the best of the bunch. His aerial ability is good for a small player and like all the midfielders he has done remarkably well given the fact that we play in some crap formation.

Glass - Hardly given a chance all season, playing left back for the reserves!

Lua-Lua - He's only young and is sometimes accused of over elaborating but has shown promise for a lad that was plucke from Div 2

Bonvin - Left winger come striker for the reserves. Seems to be quite a consistent peformer for the stiffs but has had no chances in the first team as yet despite being a left winger

Gavilan - Not really showing the promise that a £2million outlay warrants, but to be fair he has had very few opportunities in the first eleven.

What got me annyed this season SUDDEN is the fact that Douglas Hall , through his sidekick Freddie Shepherd, kept Bobby Robson from spending any money when we most needed (around Xmas). We needed a decent left back, Central defender, left winger and striker. With two or three QUALITY signings a few months ago this season could have been so different. The players that BR has signed have had a few injury problems, so we haven't really seen what Cort or Bassedas can do YET. I'm not to impressed with quinn, and I've never seen O'Brien, so can't really comment other than say that if no one else was interested at £1,5 million, then he's probably not too good. Acuna as De Biulder says seems to be the best of the bunch. LuaLau, Bernard, Dimas and Bonvin are players that may come good in a season or two.

As I say though it's the fact that Hall now says that funds will be available knowing that the transfer deadline is here and we can't spend any untill the summer. When the transfer market re opens , you can bet that we will be linked to big signings, but none will arrive. It's just a ploy to get us to enew our season tickets.

Ï hope you are wrong Rik. It could also be like he say's that he know have decided to keep the shares in the club and therefor invest large sums. But he could have made up his mind around Xmas like you say.

About all these injuries I have a teory...but that's another discussion.

Quinn I thought was pretty good against Boro he put in a plethora of fantastic crosses, O Brian However I cant understand why we want a defender from the team whove the worst deensive record in the football league bar oxford!!!!!

Lilian Thuram could play in that Bradford side and they'd still concede a shit load of goals!

Maybe YBR's thinking is to knacker the Bradford defence by removing their best player before we play them. O'Brien will never actually play for Newcastle!
