Gearing

I'm just starting out this season in the 125-novice class and I recently bought a 01 yz125. At 190 lbs. I know I’m heavy for the bike and I should make adjustments to compensate for this. My main concern is the gearing. What's the deal with the diff size sprockets, and is it a big deal? At the moment I have a 13/48 on it now and I feel as though I’m banging through the gears excessively. Any suggestions

Kevin, Gearing is VERY important. Different sprocket sizes change the way the bike performs. In my opinion, 48 is to small (for me anyway). I had an RM250 that had 48 in the rear and 2nd gear always felt too low for corners but 3rd felt too high. The result was I couldn't keep up the power band through the corners (at my novice riding level anyway). The power band on your 125 is even more critical. You want the bike to pull all the way through the turns. I would do 51 in the rear. Good luck!
