Bloated SQL 7.0 Database

greenspun.com : LUSENET : SQL Server Database Administration : One Thread

We have a hosted SQL 7.0 Database at another facility that we access via Citrix Connection. The SQL Server is on a Dell 2450, 866 P3 Processor with 512 meg Ram and 18 gig raid. The Citrix box has a Dual 1Gig P3 processor with 2 gigs of memory and 36 gig raid drive. Both boxes are running Windows 2000. The raw data should be about 350 meg. For some reason, the databse is bloated to 3.5 gig. We have tried shrinking the database, but we are not getting down to the actual data size. We have also tried exporting the data to Access (where we got actual data size) and upsizing back to SQL. We were unable to complete the upsize due to our connection. We did identify one table in particular to be hugely bloated. Do you have any idea what would cause a table to grow like that? Do you know how to fix it and avoid this problem in the future? I look forward to any advice that you can provide. Thank You.

Penny,

It is really hard to guess from what you have provided. I have on occasion seen that the indexes can get up to 150% the size of the data itself, but I don't have an off the cuff lucid explanation. I would keep trying with the upsizing.

Good Luck,

Eric
