Why was Poe unrecognized during his own time?

WHy is it that poe was not recognized during his life but became extremely famous afterwards? PLEASE RESPOND!

genius is never recognized during its time. during that time, ppl werent interested in his kind of writing. the reason he became famous afterwards is because hes basically the creator of modern mystery. many modern writers owe their sucess in this genre to him.

See Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as to Poe inspired. Poe's writing, especially his stories and free form poems, were well ahead of his time. Modern fantasy and mystery owes much to America's greatest writer.

Poe went unrecognized in his time because not only was his writing very taboo, but it scared people. When someone wrote anything remotely gothic in the early 1800s, it was a very odd occurence. Hope this helps...:)

hi, according to my teacher Poe wasn't recognized cause he wrote about decadent themes, death and was against progress... he was in a way a critic of a materialist society, americans didn't want to know of death when they were in progress. hope you understand, with these few lines best regards
