I would like to know the history behind why a cup of coffee is sometimes called a cup of joe? I have used this phrase many times but do not know the origin.

Those guesses are as good as any. I frankly don't know where the term "Joe" came from, but a lot of people use it.

Thanks for the information. I now have A response when someone asks me again, "Why did you refer to a cup of coffee as a cuppa joe?" Will now go and get another cuppa joe and resume reading the important issues posted here!
