OK Triumphs Again!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : orienteer kansas : One Thread

Mark "Mook" Everett won his first (I think) M21 US Champs title today, sweeping the field at the Short O champs in Cincinati. He was a minute ahead of the next finisher. And, we believe that Peggy added yet another title to her long list, winning F40 today. Way to go Mark and Peggy!!!

I haven't seen any results yet, but I'm sure Mary must have the word. So the Mookster finally does it--well done!

But what about the Spikester? Why no mention of his result?

-- Snorkel (danielmeenehan@aol.com), March 18, 2001.

Dan: Mike said he ran well. He thinks he was about 7th, a minute and half behind second place.

Today, the good news continues: Mook Won Again! Yes, Mark Everett is M21 Long Champ. Pavlina B. won F21. And Mike Eglinski is M35 Long O champ!!! Congratulations Mark and Mike!

Finally, an interesting tidbit: Karan Keith appeared at the meet. She has finished her PhD, and is consulting in Bloomington. Unfortunately, she is orienteering for "ICO" instead of OK. We may have to have a club meeting to discuss this transgression....

First: congrats to all the champs: Mook, Spike, Peggy. OK coach Mary has 4 national champs. Can Roy Williams match that?

So if we lose Karan Keith of ICO, there is now a Karen Keith on the KU campus I've worked with (an Amnesty Intl officer). Plus we have an 11-point relay team in Wichita - the Keith quadruplets.

Congratulations to Peggy, Mike, and Mark! What a relay team they will make! It was a great weekend for OK and for KU. Grover

It was a great weekend! Mark was extremely impressive, and Mike, just a tiny bit less. Not only did he win M35 Long yesterday, he had the fastest time on the red course, by several minutes I believe. I was a bit embarrassed to NOT win the gold in the Long! Pavlina edged me out by 1:06.

I can't believe I picked Syracuse over KU in the office pool...but then I figured either way I would have something to be happy about. So, do our weekend results foreshadow the 'Hawks' ultimate finish? Will they take home the gold, or a close silver?

Just think! The only thing that could properly cap these fine results and KU at last advancing beyond the 2nd round in post-season play would be another cut in the federal funds rate--and no doubt Snorkel is bending all his genius towards seeing that this is accomplished tomorrow. (Why else would he not have been in Ohio this past weekend?)

It looks like Spike was on a holy jihad and rained death and destruction on the rest of the Red field. My advice remains constant: never, ever, ever get in the way of a hopped up Spike when he has been doing Clifshots or Sucre Gu!

From the OCIN web page is this listing for F40 1 2785 OK - Keith, Karan 118:24

So, between day 2 and the start of day 3 did Karan become OK again? Would that be OK's 5th national champ in 2 days? What's the scoop?

Mook dominated the event. It was fun.

On the short course Mook won by a minute or so. Nobody could match his pace and avoid mistakes. The WinSplits on-line results show no mistakes for him. It was impressive.

On the long course, Mook's stategic genuis was apparent. He went out hard enough to stay in the race, but easy enough to avoid blowing up. The long course was two approximately even loops. Mook slowed a bit on the second loop. He was about 2 minutes slower. But, everyone else died on the last loop. Only one of the other runners who finished in the top ten was as close as 5 minutes slower on the second loop. Eric Bone, who would have been one of the pre-race favorites, ran the first loop almost a minute and a half faster than Mook. But, Eric ran the second loop almost 12 minutes slower than Mook.
