Safety Tips

This in from a doctor and electrical engineer couple:

Q: Should I use hot oil if I burn myself welding? A: Do NOT waste time and health by looking for hot oil. If the oil is just a bit too hot, the immediate effect will be to make the injury worse. DO NOT DO THAT.

The MOST IMPORTANT thing is to cool the injured area straight away. And the very best way of doing that is to run cold water over it.

Q: What should I do if I have sore eyes after welding / can I weld without a helmet?

A: Arc welding without a helmet is just lunacy. It will result in destroyed eyesight. And IF one gets an arc flash, the best thing is to seek out the ophthalmic department at the nearest suitable hospital. They will have a better treatment. In Auckland the Eye Dept is at Auckland Hospital in the Wallace Block.

Do not mess with your eyes.

Do people really ask these questions?

They must be the same people that peer into a fuel tank with lit match.

Do I need a welding helmet, really! How long would they look at the sun before someone told them that was bad?

If I hit my thumb with a hammer, should I drop something heavy on my foot to keep my mind off the pain? Yeah, I wanna see these people on Junk Yard Wars! And they wonder why they never get called back.
