Serpentine/Undulating Machine

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Junkyard Wars : One Thread

The challenge is to build a machine that moves by serpentine or undulating motion. Think snakes or inch worms! No wheels allowed, or perhaps allow UNPOWERED wheels. The prime requirement is that the motive force creates motion of the vehicle's body to propel it along. The vehicles will then race on a prescribed course for distance or time.

IMHO (OK not so humble!), this is a GREAT idea! It allows for unlimited creativity and certainly many different solutions!! Of course, The Hooligans of Horror should be one of the teams to compete in this challenge!!!!

An undulating machine sounds like something that can't be shown on TLC!

This one's either going to be real tough or real easy. Remember the "build a bridge and get acrossed it" challenge? Now picture the entry that used four bicycles and extra wheels for tipping it up and down. Rebuild the center section to accordion fold in and out and you've got it. The only thing is, if it carried the four person crew, that crew would have to trot back and forth along the length of the machine to be on the end NOT being raised and moved. Tedious, at best.
