Teamtalk Transfer Round-up

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Apparently NUFC had the following four players watched last night in the Birmingham v Blackburn match.

Damian Duff, (Blackburn) David Dunn, (Blackburn) Darren Purse, (Brum) Johnson, The centre back not the striker (Brum) Doubtful that we would be able to get any of these players, certainly before Transfer deadline day. Bart Goor scored again for Anderlecht as they signed off in the Champions League with a 2-0 win over Real Madrid. I would like to see him signed before the transfer deadline day.

What position does Bart play?

He's a LEFT WINGER, big fella fairly pacey and can score goals, when did we last have one of them? The only problem is, would he join us? No European football would be a stumbling block, should we not qualify.

We won't qualify which has cost the club millions in cash and the signatures of some potential stars. Players are more likely to sign for Leicester or Ipswich than they are us. As they are far more likely to qualify for Europe

Bart sounds good.

He played for Belgium in Euro 2000 and looked impressive. Hopefully our favourite Belgian Mr Albert could do some 'persuading' on our behalf?

We are crying out for a left sided midfielder whi is going to give us some balance and more importantly the width so we can stretch opposition defences across the park. At the minute they know they only have to stop us in the width of the 18 yard box, which is easy for any half decent defence.

We need to open up defences so that we can add to out useless tallies of a) Crosses into the box from near the by line and b) shots/goals from our midfielders who advance into space when the wingers have taken the defence wide.

It's only been the Solano/Dyer combination that has held us back so now Dyer is out for the season we are going to have to adapt.

We would actually be better off playing Gary Speed as left midfield than we are now. I know that that is his weakest position but it would give us the shape. And if we have shape, then our attacks could come down two flanks as opposed to the only outlet that we have now.

If that list of 'targets' is true, do we have a shortage of people whose first name begins with 'D'?

Don't worry, I'll be off line soon 80)

Or why not give Stephen Glass a few games? As long as we have two strong midfielders in the central positions i.e. Acuna and Speed, Nobby and Glass can play on the wings and give us genuine width.

If Speed and Acuna are disciplined enough we shouldn't lose the battle in the middle and Glass and Solano can cause some havoc.

It is such a basic rigid formation that it will probably be discounted but I firmly believe we need some formation instead of giving free roles to players.

We need shape. We are better playing an average player in position than a good player out of position. Shape = balance = wins. When was the last time we played with a balanced side?

-- Anonymous, March 15, 2001

After further browsing the speculation is that we were watching Andy Johnson the striker not the centre back.

Of course there were other players playing.

Left midfield is speed's weakest position? That's where he played in Leeds Championship winning side of 92/93. Does that say something about Howard Wilkinson or Gary Speed?

-- Anonymous, March 15, 2001

I don't suppose he was ever that quick but I reckon he's too slow to play on the extreme left of midfield anyway. He has a presence about him which dictates that nowadays he should be in the middle, if only to give us a bit of height in the middle.

We have to look elsewhere, Speed is not the answer.

I never thought he was. At 5.5m he should've been more than the answer. he should've been posing questions of the quality of opposition players for all the right reasons. ; ((

I just went home for lunch and watched a bit of Blackburn versus Brum. Jannsen looked class at times but not all the time. I have heard Souness on numerous occassions saying he should be more consistent.

Purse looked the part and he has a real attitude about him. The only downside is that attitude can work against him, hence his sending off and three match ban for elbowing someone!

Not keen on that Andy Johnson the Brum striker. There are plenty of better players available.

Damian Duff didn't do a right lot but he put the effort in.

Cue Buff and Mac: "What was his clapping like?" :-)

-- Anonymous, March 15, 2001

Do our medical staff know how to treat players with the clap?

Teamtalk and miDas are full of shite, they hear that Newcastle scouts are at St Andrews and think of Duff and Dunn, adding a couple of Brum players to widen the odds. Funny thing is they speccualted at the wrong player. Jansen was the target, you'll see....( in the summer)

So Shearer, Cort, Bridges and Jannsen? Looks boody good line up to me and hopefully would banish our striking problems for the season. Lua- Lua and Ameobi continue their education in the reserves.

-- Anonymous, March 15, 2001

Surely not the same Cumbrian "crawl over broken glass to play for NUFC" but signed for other clubs twice when we were in for him as they offered better personal terms Matt Jansen? Bleeds black and white, clearly. Why buy foreign mercenaries when you can buy English ones?

-- Anonymous, March 15, 2001

Have we ever agreed a fee for Jansen with his club at the time?

-- Anonymous, March 15, 2001

I believe we did agree a fee for him, but pulled out allegedly based on his Agent's extortionate wage demands on his behalf. I think this was when he went from Carlisle to Palace when he was still really a kid.
This may have been entirely explicable - we probably viewed him as a kid with some potential, but requiring a lot of development: Palace probably viewed him as a high-potential, ready made striker, perhaps offering him first-team terms.

We were reportedly interested in him again when he went to Blackburn, but I actually wonder how far that interest was really progressed. I can't help but wonder whether Janssen may have received a 'bum wrap' locally because of the usual poor-to-abysmal communications.

I still think he's a class player who would look fine & dandy in b&w.

Latest scan of the rumours has us seriously interested in the following - O'Brien (Bradford), Darren Purse (Birmingham), Neil Harris (Millwall), in addition to the old standards - Damien Duff and Matt Jansen.

These may or may not all be accurate, but their is definitely a common thread - young British/Irish players. Interesting.

-- Anonymous, March 15, 2001

But a club spokeswoman explained: "He (O'Brien) is simply one of a number of players the manager is monitoring."

-- Anonymous, March 16, 2001

Don't want Janssen - turned us down and had the temerity to say that we lacked ambition - then promptly got relegated with Blackburn. He's a Jonah, 2 major transfers and took both clubs down. No thank you.
