It's become painfully apparent that decent 100% whole wheat bread from the supermarket is now an endangered species with most of what's currently offered apparently little more than tan colored Wonderbread with a bit of bran in it. No body, no texture and no point in eating it.
As a result, my wife and I have decided to throw in the towel about yet another electrical appliance and get a bread machine. What I'd like to know is what's currently on the market that will suit our needs?
This is what we feel are priorities:
#1 - It's got to be able to make good bread from 100% whole wheat, either what we mill ourselves or acquired elsewhere.
#2 - As time permits we'd like to just have the machine make and knead the dough and we'll take it from there.
#3 - Ideally it should be able to handle other grains as well as I'd like to make some real pumpernickle
#4 - Given my druthers, I'd druther have a loaf that bakes horizontally rather than vertically but this isn't as important as the first three priorities.
#5 - Money is always a consideration but we're looking at this as a long-term investment so cheap is not an absolute necessity if a more expensive machine will better meet the above.
Anyone have some suggestions?
In a perfect world we'd just bake our bread the old-fashioned way but for the next couple of years while my wife and I both work full-time, she's also in graduate school and I take care of the baby and house doing bread baking on top of it is not a viable option.
Thanks for any help that can be given.
.......Alan.

Re: Choosing a bread machine. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alan,
I have 2 Regals (one at home and one at farm) that would do what you want, but they do vertical 1 1/2 lb. loaves. The Regal Kitchen Pro one step up from mine is suppose to be great and does the horizontal loaf. My Brother in Law has a Welbilt that does a 2 lb horizonally that he swears is the best. I have given the links for these below.

I have a Sunbeam bread machine, which I use a lot. It can be bought at WalMart for about $50 or less. Makes horizontal loaf, either 1-1/2 or 2 pounds. Plenty of selections for many types of bread. It can be used to make the dough only, without baking, if you wish.
