UEFA ANNOUNCEMENT EXPECTED ON VIOLENCE by Nic Evans

UEFA are expected to issue a statement regarding the violent outbreaks that marred two Champions League clashes, following Tuesday's finale to the second group stage.

The game between Galatasaray and Paris Saint Germain at the Parc des Princes had to be suspended for 25 minutes as Turkish fans, angry at their side losing 2-0 started to cause problems.

Galatasaray missed the chance of topping Group B with the loss, coupled with Deportivo La Coruna's 1-1 draw in the Giuseppe Meazza with Milan.

There were angry scenes at that game too, as having been eliminated by the result, the Milanese Ultras tried to storm the area reserved for VIPs, but were beaten back by riot police.

Milan had two goals disallowed for offside and the only scoring came through two extremely debatable penalties, which did not help the mood.

However, it was in the French capital that the most troubling incidents took place, Portuguese referee Vitor Manuel Pereira taking the players off the pitch just short of the hour mark.

Turkish fans were seen to rip up seating and began throwing them into the home supporters section. This caused the PSG fans to react and five people were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Following from last season's incidents with both Leeds and Arsenal, that left two dead and scores injured, it remains to be seen how far Uefa's patience with Galatasaray lasts.

With the Turkish giants having reached the last eight of the competition for the first time, the high-profile status of the next round is unlikely to see any major sanctions levied against them, unless there is further trouble.
