Derwentside and Dougal

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Dougal, now that you have slagged off my home town twice on this board I'll beg your pardon to reply. Consett has a split of about 70/30 towards Newcastle fans. Most of the local Toon fans travel great distances and at great expense all over this country and when the opportunity arises abroad following their favourite team.

If you knew anything about the town you would realise that the people of this small town are very special. After almost having the place shut down when Thatcher closed the steel works (and yes most of us would still happily dance on her grave) the area has regenerated itself and become a thriving community. People from Consett look after each other be they black and white or red and white.

I notice that you are happy enough to work in this "aafull place," so it musn't be so bad if you are willing to soil your hands with our hard earned money. Thanks for patronising me and the people of my area, it's so gratifying when our betters lower themselves to visit us. Maybe you could give us some advice on how to pull ourselves out of the dark ages? Ever your forelock tugging servant Normally a lurker now and then a contributor Martym ps I am pleased you could find an internet connection in derwentside, one day we might get running water and electric!

I think you've mis-read Martym......you're gonna have to be big enough to apologise :))

Martym
Dougal is actually convalescing at home after a spell in hospital. She lives and works in London.

This is all very well documented on other threads.

Half cocked seems pretty apt to me.

You're not Dancing Dave incognito, are you ?

You forgot to mention them lovely tortilla chips they make there.

Martym pal, I have to admit on being born in Consett (Richard Murray Hospital), tho never lived there , still have memories of the place, I am sure you will agree its the coldest place in the England, more so than Tow Law and Alston, the red dust has thankfully gone now,

(1) When under -age drinking was frowned upon my crew,(16 and I was working) would spend our Saturday nights boozing at the Jolly Drovers, Leadgate before Rocking around the Clock at the Pont.

(2) I have been to numerous countries in the world ,it may have been testerone urges at that particular time but without a shadow of a doubt the lasses in the Consett area were the most beautiful I have ever seen , and it was a pleasure, that mix of Geordie and Irish just appealed to me , sparkling eyes and hair like Whitby jet, blondes were rare, always in the background was the faith tho

(3) Run outta town in 58, trouble Consett Co-op - Teddy Boy`s picnic!

(4) Returned again 20 years later to build your new threpenny piece state of the art Bus Station which was instantly vandalised ,is it still in place?

(5) Playing cricket at Shotley Bridge, at peace with the world.

(6) Playing football against CIC Juniors, bliddy cold.

*I should not speak for her but Dougal may be a wee bit down at present , and its who you have caring for you not where and who better than ya mam, keep posting Martym, she would like that.

I do indeed apologise if I have misread your thread Dougal. As I stated I am an occassional lurker, but if I feel my own people are being slated then I feel the need to reply. So accept my apologies if I have misunderstood you. And I hope your convalesence goes well. As for Consett being the coldest place in England, if this is the case why do all the girls on Fridays and Saturdays wear so little?

Late 1950s Consett Soap Opera ..... "Where the red dust lay", subtitled, "she got layed in the red dust"

Story line .... young William, soon to leave the area, has one last visit to the place that has the beauties, Consett. Young starry eyed, raven-haired beauty of a girl out for her first night in the big town. She hopes to meet a muscley young steel worker, with an understated smile, but a sparkle in his eyes and something more substantial in his pocket. They have one night of gently alcoholic passion together, then he is swept away to sea, never to see that dark haired temptress again. Many years on, the soap continues. The child born of that fateful meeting has grown. Her father has never seen her. Technology unkowingly brings them back together.

"Buff 'n' Dougal" the later years, to be continued

Screach, dressage may be critical in your genetic investigation , DNA from a red suit and velvet collar, Boston strings (aha Ciara ), suede brothel creepers, (cesspit of evidence),strands of human hair welded together with Brycreem , sample corkscrew design aka Tony C.

The prime piece of evidence will be my whitish military mac,I was the only loon of 18 years who wore one, my pride and joy, all walnut buttons, epaulettes , flaps , wot a puller. Alan Ladd wore one in some film, Harry Lime in the Third Man ,I was hooked , refused to snog in it, too valuable , Dougals

My dad is from Tow Law - Consett was one of the day trips when I used to stay at my Grandmas in Summer.

I beg to differ re cold - Tow Law is a quantum jump colder than Consett - its just that the nerves numb sooner

1)Martym, I was raised in Consett and, I'm sorry, I hate it. As a native, I'm sorry, but I think it's my prerogrative to hate the place. It's just a place that depresses me. Sorry, but that's just the way it is. 2) My dad was made redundant from the steel works and did various jobs until five years ago when, determined not be one of Major's millions, he moved to London to get some money for him and me mam in their old ages. 3)I think I probably travel further to Newcastle games than most residents of Consett, travelling to almost all games, home and away, from London. I am merely convalescing from illness in what is very definitely the clean air of Consett. 4) Do you want to get your facts right in future?

Buff et al, re the Irish thing, you're quite right - I went to Catholic schools and for about five years was the only person with an English surname and that was only cos me mam and dad decided to get married across the Catholic-Irish/Protestant-English divide (and were actually both vut off from their families).

-- Anonymous, March 15, 2001

Is vutting painfull then Dougs? ;))

-- Anonymous, March 15, 2001

Almost as painful as having 2 "l"s!!

PS. Martym, just read your apology: no worries but I was initially a bit upset. No one is prouder than me of the North East of England and I am hoping to come back here to live and work. However, I don't particularly like Consett, possibly because of all the bliddy awful memories of the steel works closing and my dad being made redundant time and time again from various European factories that would open, make a quick buck and close up. I agree that there are a lot of special people there - when almost all of a town's men get made redundant at the same time, it's apt to bringing out the best in people. My dad's only option was to move to London to get a job, with me mam working in a shop in Consett and commuting to London every so often to see me dad.
