how to raise worms

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I need a good reference manual or back issue that explains caring for worms. I also need a good source for worms in or around Shawnee, Oklahoma. Any suggestions? (Thanks for the most useful magazine I've ever read on self suffiency!!!)

Vickie:

There is a category under Older Threads devoted to Vermiculture (Worms). You will find a lot of useful information there.

Go for it. It's easy, if you can handle all the worm rancher jokes :>) The magicworms site has plans for a good bin system and the library should have some good references. www.wormwoman.com is also a good site. Its maintained by Mary Appelhof, the author of "Worms Eat My Garbage". As I said, its eaaassy to get started, easier still to expand and stress a marriage (not bad though :>). Lynn and I are now ramping up to provide a security parachute in case layoffs come my way with this economy.

Thanks for the tips! What quick response! I've only been a subscriber for 1 year but now I have access to a computer and I feel like I have a new family. Thanks everyone!

Anything can be used to house worms, just about. As long as it is dark, and has some drainage, they will be fine. Feed them anything that once was alive (stole that, but forgot where). I go to the local bait store for mine when I need to buy them. They might also buy back from you!!! Any kind of worm will work, you don't HAVE to use the redworms everyone touts in the mags and sites.... In fact, round here, the bait shops stopped selling redworms, because the fishermen won't buy them. Keep them dark and very moist, and feed them all your old coffee, filters, etc and veggie trimmings that don't go to cats, dogs, poultry. And, have fun!!
