I reckon this is the fourth time in 20 years that the subject for the above title is Tony Green. Diluting the article it states that it is a tribute to Tony`s ability that he is still fondly remembered by the St James Park faithful. The fans were wonderful when I played and even though it is 25 years on I still get invited to supporters functions and the local radio. Rarely can a player who appeared so briefly have gained such legendary status, he only made 33 league appearances before finally succumbing to a persistant knee injury retiring in 73. He lives in Blackpool, teaches maths and for 25 years has been a member of the pools panel, Tony your memory lives on and then some,

Did his teacher training at our school.

Took our games lesson one day, and I played against him. Such was my presence on the playing fields of Whickham that I have to say he barely got a kick. But when he did he floated around always just out of reach of anyone trying to tackle him. Nice man too, for a teacher.

saw him play twice - I can remember my dad pointing him out and saying "That's Tony Green son, forget Supermac, he's world-beater", a month later some goon from Palace (I think) ended his career. In hindsight I honestly think he could have been as inspirational for us as someone like Giles was at Leeds or Brady at Arse. We were cursed then and we're cursed now.

I remember his testimonial season and a show that was done at the City Hall in his honour. The whole team were there.

Malcolm MacDonald had to introduce Jasper Carrott as TOTB and JC walked onto the stage, MM wasn't off it quick enough and JC told him to piss off.

Bearing in mind that this was mid 70's, MM was the bees knees, and someone had the audacity to come to the Toon and say that to him, the entire place fell about.

Classic.

Tony Green - absolute genius. The best I've seen in b&w in 35 years, but oh so briefly. In my footy lifetime the only one who comes close was George Best in his prime.

I cannot let this one pass, without paying tribute to Tony Green who stands higher in my estimation to Ernie Taylor, George Hannah, Ivor Broadis, Ivor Allchurch Paul Gascoigne. His early exit for the game was a tragedy for us and the footballing public. I wonder if modern orthpopedics would have been able to rectify his problem? Another potential great was the young Sheff Weds inside forward who had his leg crushed in a bus accident. And remember Dooley -- the only centre forward who made Frank Brennan look bad. Sheff Weds beat us 4-0 at SJP and in those days that was a real feat

Couldn't let this pass without agreeing with what has been written about him. Absolute class on the grass. Goes without saying, that I consider him the best player that I have ever seen at SJP. Those who saw him, remember him. Untouchable. Pure genius in Black & White. Very special.
