Time to blood some young 'uns

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Just noticed the reserves scoreline, well done lads, well done. I guess Cort was alright, Bonvin and Gavilan doing well, time to give them some reward and move em on up into the first team picuture.

It seems to me that Bonvin is playing some very good football. He must get his chance soon.

Not until we're 'safe' IMO, syme - need 42 points minimum and we're not there yet.

Bonvin's a tidy player, but not very strong. I'd actually like to see the two Caldwells getting a run out together in the first team before the end of the season.

BTW, for those who haven't seen the result, the Resorves beat Liverpool 2-0 tonight (Bonvin, Gavilan).

Point taken clarky! Since you have yer finger more on the pulse of our reserve team than most. So Bonvin's not very big? Is he skillfull and quick? Is he a ball winner or a playmaker? Is he in the same mold as Gavilan or even smaller than that? Were you there tonight or not? I think we are safe and I don't think we shoud fold, but surely putting them on the bench seems like a good start. I agree about the caldwells though and coppinger too. Do you think it is better to be blooded in the first half or come on as a substitute.

I didn't make the game tonight syme - didn't have a ticket. However, Steph has just advised on the Match Report thread that they are finally allowing you to pay at the gate - be nice if they informed us of the change in policy, but I guess that's expecting a little too much.

I've only seen Bonvin 2 or 3 times. I'd say he was about 5'10", but not very beefy, taller and perhaps a bit stronger than Gavilan, but not as fast. He's a skilful kind of player and deffo not a ball winner. He's nippy, but doesn't have real pace. In terms of back-up creative midfield players, I'd say he's as good as any, but have doubts that he's really PL standard.

I think it's generally better to blood young 'uns by bringing them off the bench when there's generally less pressure. Having said that, I've noticed defenders often do better when they're on from the start - something to do with focus and concentration, methinks.

Thanks for the match report steph, good stuff. I see your point clarky, however i think it is harder for a young 'un to come off the bench and get into a groove when the whole team is already in one than it is for him to settle into his natural game. I don't think we'd want our kids coming on and gettin pasted. Plus on the other hand, how do you judge someone when they are fresh and they end up marking a forward that has run his arse off for the previous 70 minutes?

I can see the perils of giving them the first half, but at this stage of the season can we afford not to take chances? I don't think Rob lee is going to be playing a full game season, time sadly is catching him. A young player can find his maturity on the field with the big boys, look at hughes, caldwell, griffin, ameobi.

The future is bright, bring more through, get rid of marcy etc.
