Alan Shearer will see a specialist after suffering a recurrence of the knee injury which forced him to have an operation.

The 30-year-old Newcastle skipper, who made his comeback from injury in the home defeat against Manchester City on 24 February, broke down in training.

"There was a reaction to the knee which was operated on a few months back," Shearer told the News of the World.

"I came off straight away as a precaution and will be seeing a specialist next week."

Shearer, who retired from international football at the start of the season, has suffered from injury all season and this latest setback has raised fears that he could miss the remainder of the season.

The timing is another blow for boss Bobby Robson, especially with £7million signing Carl Cort expected to be back in first-team action soon following hamstring surgery.

Robson was hopeful that the former Wimbledon frontman could link up with Shearer as part of a £22million strikeforce.

I think I'll send the Toon 'The Childrens Encyclopaedia of Personal Health & Hygiene' - "pain is the body's defence mechanism telling you something isn't right".

Does it really need a Specialist to tell you that? If he doesn't tell you that when you're experiencing pain, could it just be that he's talking cr@p?

I despair!

BTW, the local Sunday Sun also carries this story. It says he broke down in a practice match against the Reserves, and hobbled off in obvious pain.

They suggest he's out for the season, but I doubt that's authoritive. However, it could well prove to be accurate.

quite frankly, i hope he is. it's about time we got him sorted out properly. he's no use to us half fit and playing through the pain barrier, no matter how admirable. get well soon but come back when yer fixed.

rant over.

Agree with ya, Min. I thought he sounded a bit foolish after the Everton match saying he was playing through the pain and was told to expect it blah blah. Had a bad feeling, but hoped I was wrong. We aren't that desperately in need of his goals, his crosses, or anything else he contributes on the pitch if it means risking further (or permanent) damage. If his attitude is so inspirational in the dressing room, then fine, hang around and be inspirational. Consider it early managerial training.

A depressing thought. Will Shearer ever play for NUFC again?

First Ferguson - injured and returned too early Second, Cort - Ditto And now Shearer. Please don't let LKD go down the same route. Next we'll buy Michael Bridges and give him a run out before he's fit.

Why does it continue? Do any other clubs have such a "record" of premature returns from injury?

well said Gibbo!!

with dubious link to other thread ....

if you pay £15m for a player he has to play

missing out on a £5m player is a pain in the arse, if you've got three of them then two or three are likley to play, all the money in one is daft gamble ..... Shepherd's fault, but hey Shearer is a Freeman of the City so it was worth all that money
