The Year of the Snake

From January 24, 2001 until February 11, 2002, the Year of the Metal Snake will bring its energy to all.

While the Western world has often regarded the Snake as a traditional symbol of danger, unsavory character and evil, this is not so in Chinese Astrology. Snakes are considered symbols of cleverness and wisdom. Many regard them as good omens and the guardians of hidden treasures.

This may be a result of the Snake’s incredible ability to take any situation and turn it into something prosperous. The Year of the Snake will lend strength to finding solutions to life’s challenges regardless of the adversity along the way.

Snake years progress at a slower, more intense pace. It’s a time of studiousness with a particular interest in science and culture. Through focused concentration, a great deal of knowledge can be gained during this year. But focus is the key word as the laid back nature of the Snake Year can see many rather lethargic and even lazy.

Sexuality and sensuality are emphasized during a Year of the Snake. Physical attractiveness and one’s lure to a potential or existing mate becomes very important. Appeal, charm, and seductiveness are all enhanced, setting the stage for new relationships and stronger self-esteem. Yet, with the Snake’s tendency to act fickle and superficial at times, the need for caution is essential. Being satisfied and committed to one partner is one of the challenges of this year, even for those who are married. Faithfulness can be challenged when a mate doesn’t reciprocate advances.

When it comes to money, Snake Years generally bring much prosperity. While greater generosity is a part of this influence, it’s more likely to be time that is given than money. Once a goal is set, little will get in the way to achieving this. Again, though caution is necessary. It can be far more tempting to walk over anyone or anything that gets in the way, regardless of consequences. Slow and steady with the confidence that things will be achieved is the best pace for this year. Positions such as that of a teacher, philosopher, writer, psychiatrist or psychic medium are all favored for the Snake influence.

The Year of the Snake brings a time of enhanced intuitiveness. Facts and information won’t hold the same impact as an inner sense about something. Considerable growth and expansion can be had through quiet, contemplative exercises such as meditation. This year is sure to bring faith and personal beliefs into the forefront. Along with this, it can be expected that emotions will be much closer to the surface and less controlled in many circumstances, especially where love is concerned.

This year's element is Metal. It is an important element to observe as it represents clarity, purity, and precision. This can be somewhat of a challenge during a Snake Year as often it brings more trials and tribulations than peace, especially when it comes to reaching goals when there is competition. The nature of the element Metal is to delineate and to define. It adds rigidity to the year and can create structure while bringing the heart of things to the surface. The solitary element of Metal will intensify the need for privacy and autonomy when it comes to solving problems.

The Year of the Snake can be a much-welcomed break for all following the forcefulness of the Dragon Year that has just passed. Yet, while it signals a time of greater peace, it can also be the feeding ground for the unscrupulous. Despite an inclination to go on your gut instinct, find out the facts and read the fine print this year. Focusing energy on attaining greater wisdom and inner balance is the best way to spend this new year.
