What influenced Poe to write the Raven? What where the reactions of society to the Raven?

I really don't know how Poe came up with the raven, but as far as the reaction....people liked it, people had nightmare's about it. Kids would come up to Poe on the street and start flapping their arms like wing, and he would turn around and say "nevermore" and they would runaway and come back.
