Was Poe burried alive?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Work of Edgar Allan Poe : One Thread

I was told that Poe was always afraid of dying, and being burried alive. I heard that he was burried. People decided to open up his toomb, and he was scrunched to the bottom, and there were claw marks on the casket. Is it true?

what a horrible death, to be buried alive. to have to lay in the darkness, enclosed in a wooden casket, and knowing that you were going to die. and not just that you were going to die, but that you were going to die soon, and you were going to suffer immense pain. i should think no one would have the heart to commit such a crime against my beloved edgar. who would be so much of a monster that they would take a mans fears and turn them into a fatal reality? o, what tangled webs we weave when we first practice to deceive... and to alisha, my petty little taod, you are a greasy-illbred- rabbitsucker, and i should hope that you in vain. i hope your corpse is dragged around in the streets, and then when there is almost nothing left of your limp, lifeless body, men and women are allowed to come form their homes and sign their names with their urine.

No, i'm pretty sure he wasn't buried alive. I'm doing a research paper on him and i reads somewhere that he got a "congestion of the brain." wutever that means. i'm thinking he had some brain disease-- maybe a tumor. hope that helps. helen.

Well Poe, oddly enough, was not burried alive where did you get your info? The dollar store? He was due in to drinking and after his beloved Virinia, Also his cousin, died he was very down and ill! Believe it or not he tried to marry again just before he died! Her name was Sarah Elmira Royster Shelton, his high school sweetheart! He was mourning over all the looses he has taken which caused his "cogestion of the brain"!Basically he was delirious and semiconscious and died 4 days later! Hope that helps and anyone who knows any info mainly on his poem Annabel lee let me know im workin on an essay now!

I have no clue but being burried alive isn't something to worrie about any more. When you die your bodie is embalmed making it impossible to wake up in the coffin. Still worried eh? Get creamnated!!!

well ignore all thease other fuckers edgar allen poe did die of some sort of brain problem but he was always scared of being burried alive so what he done was made a will and in this will he had a design of the coffin he wanted to be burried in and it was a coffin that could be opened from the inside so they burried him in this coffin with a troul of some sort and sure enough he was alive because he dug himself out a couple of years later he did die from a brain problem but i do not know about claw marks when they did open his coffin that time i think thats bollock i have heard of it but have not found any truth to it but the first time he was burried he was ALIVE

What utter nonsense. Poe's fear of being buried alive was no greater than that of any of his contemporaries. (Note that in the story "Premature Burial," the hero isn't really buried alive at all.) And Poe was most certainly NOT buried alive himself.

Hello, I was told nothing. I know not one thing about Poe. I think it is possible. I don't know the answer. I don't think anyone does. So I am sorry. You people shouldn't use so much prfanity on the FUCKING internet. Do you know what I mean? I am going to say that he was burried alive for the hey of it.

Poe and Morrison are together drinking and laughing at your bizzare question.

For starters, in my relative's name, would you PLEASE all learn to SPELL? And TYPE, for that matter. Your grammar is far from atrocious- it just plain SUCKS. And profanity isn't effective if you cannot spell it. I am currently researching the factors of Edgar's death and burial- and this site is an abomination to his name. If you wish to voice an opinion, please research it thoroughly before you print bullshit (SEE- correct spelling??) Take a little time, people. Even though Edgar spent very little time on this planet he made an indelible mark that we all got to see in school. Learn to appreciate it, you dumbfucks; oh,wait, correct spelling again. Hope it doesn't confuse you too much.

Milan Patel you have no right to correct anyone's spelling because your dumbass spelled "misspelled"(mis-spelled) wrong!

May i ask.. Why the FUCK do you guys argue about SPELLING? Sylvia asked a question about: Poe beeing burried alive.

Redgy Poe

How did this become an issue over spelling? All this talk about spelling is a bunch of bullshit, just simply answer the freaking question, Poe was not alive when he was placed in his casket, there it is short and sweet. And you dumbasses who come here to argue over spelling need to get a life. D.

I cant imagine being burried alive. I just saw a special on the history channel about a lady who was burried alive. They found dirt in her lungs. Can you imagine that?

Good grief. The profanity. It's crazy. You people are scary and I hope I never meet any of you in life. I don't think Poe was buried alive. I agree with the person who said it was his drinking. He WAS however afaid of being buried alive, and in "The Cask of Amontillado", he killed one of the main characters bymaking him be buried alive. And from now on, please watch the language.
