Board Exams in "Love Among the Ruins"

I just saw the TNT rerun of "Love Among the Ruins" (Season One). At one point Carter is seen studying for the Board Exams, which he has to take in 4 months. Isn't he a 1st year student then? Wouldn't he be taking the Board Exams as a 2nd year student?

Never to early to start studying. Other then that I wouldn't know.

He is a third year student in his first year of clinical rotations. There are three parts to the Boards: Part I is taken after the first two years, Part II during the last year of medical school and Part III during the internship after graduating med school. Carter was probably studying for Part II.

Most third year clinical rotations require a board (subject) exam at the end of each clinical rotation (surgery subject exam after the surgery rotation, etc). These subject exams are the portion of the board exam pertaining to that specific rotation.
