hi what is the use of softbox is it to reduce the flash outout? i own a elan II /50 so can i reduce it using flash compensation? thanks

The softbox will reduce output, but it's purpose is to soften shadow lines & reduce the appearance of contrast.

If all you want to do is reduce flash output the Flash Exposure Comp (FEC) will do fine.

The softbox reduces shadows by increasing the size of the light source. A small (point) light source will give hard shadows, and is called hard light. Often (but not always) this is considered undesirable. Soft light is generally more pleasing and more flattering.
