An interesting challenge would to build a coil gun, and see who can shoot a piece of metal the farthest / highest, hardest, etc..

A coil gun is an electromagnetic gun-- coils of wire are charged up to pull the projectile out of the barrel...

Contestants could use an engine to build a generator, and if they're smart, a device to wrap wire for them. Just an idea.

Rather than just "coilguns," make the challenge "electric cannons" so you can have two different machines, like, say, a coilgun vs. a railgun.
