Foot and Mouth

I read that the farm at Heddon where the FMD broke out is owned by a Sunderland man.

Should all Mackems now be ritually piled up high and set fire to?

The donkeys at SoL although not themselves victims of the disease are known to carry it. Although anyone watching them last night on Sky will have noticed that without Phillips and then without Quinn they looked like they suffered more from mad cow disease than foot and mouth

My father in law is a shhep farmer on the Cumbrian hills above Alston. He asked me to find the MAFF.gov site so he could find out the latest news. On Saturday night his farm was bordering the infected area of Cumbria/ durham. The other side of the road was infected, his side was OK. By Sunday afternoon the infected are covered half of Durham,Half of Northumbria and his falm was now in the infected area. It's really just a matter of time till his Sheep wil be infected by the looks of things. The strange thing about this disease is it's not that bad. Not much worst than having a cold. Animals don't die from it, they get better without any need to find a cure. But for some strange reason hundreds of thousands are to be destroyed, so they don't affect others.

Strange world we live in.

Rik, can I correct you on the last point you made - re beast >>>>>>>>

(a)In a dairy herd the milk yield is down by more than half, £££££££

(b)Cattle as you say do not suffer apart from ending up a leaner beast

(c)Vaccination until 1991 , why stop it ? export sales is the answer, we are then admitting we are a foot and mouth country.

(d)Example of European double standards -: Brit farmer culls 300 pigs due to F and M , onto stats, / Ineficient French farmer culls 300 pigs due to F and M , goes on the official record as 1, (herd).

(e)Rik, and the much travelled Screach may reinforce this view but on filling your entry card on visiting the States/Oz it is not advis- able to admit `Father in Law ` is a farmer or you are a involved.

(f)Aberdeenshire under licence are getting livestock to the killing houses , majority of us need meat, and we need to keep the price down , watching Cannibal on 4 last night opened my eyes to this.

(g)Surrounded by farms the usual crack is , never seen a poor farmer yet, maybe but at what price I ask, afraid its the industry with the highest sucide rate in Scotland.

(h)My immediate neighbour is 92 years old, with failing eyesight and advancement of years he is down to his last 10 beast,he would be heartbroken if it came to him , when he sells them at mart he will lease his parks out , when I asked why , just so I can stand and watch the cattle in the park, even though they are not mine was the answer, old fashioned yeah, corny maybe ! but its nice in a world thats short of ______________

Sorry to disagree buff.

If anyone is coming to OZ PLEASE say you have been on a farm etc. (Only if you have of course) This is not a Pick me Pick me situation.

We have fought for years to keep this place disease free from Animal and Veretable diseases.

Gus, the remark was a wee bit tongue in the cheek , but hand on heart can anyone in the U.S.A or fal that matter Oz say that there`es is a F & M statiscally free country, I kid nee body , not one to mince my words tho, countries are so vast, farms are well spread out ,stake my reputation that it can be hidden from attention in individual cases.

I DID realize that buff. :o)

Although not being here all that long really, I would have to say no one I know and I do work with people in the know, as opposed to In The Know, tell me that Oz has never had a case of F&M
