What keeps all coal from changing into diamonds?

im not really sure about this..but ill take a guess, i think it deals with extreme high pressure and maybe even extreme high heat that the coal undergoes over a certain period of time. but im really not sure.. i think professor Gabel's answer will be more informing.......hope i helped... :P
