New Transfer System

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Or is it really new? The report I see on the Beeb website is not that informative. But there is to be a transfer "window" - suppose this give Sheppard a further excuse to 'protect the club's interests'?

It was said as a critisism of the board on another thread that the Youth Academy is officially "on hold". If the transfer system plans to be announced today are concrete, there is very little point in having a youth set up. Why train 50 young lads over 6 years when only 2% will make the grade? Hardly any will be international class and then can leave at the age of 23 when all the club can recoup is the training costs.

It will be much more cost effective to be picking up top class players (paying them high salaries) knowing they are proven quality without the risk of young untested talent.

He ay have been a little premature but Keegan had a point with the reseves.

Business opportunity looms, clubs can recoup training costs. How enterprising woud it be for a director or two to set up there own acadamy & bill teh club for training, then the club can document huge costs for training the lads & recoup extra cash & owners of the training facility will be quids in. A good idea but I trust Freddie will have thought of ot already.

This new agreed transfer system hasn't been agreed by the respective players unions and they are not happy about it. I can't see this being resolved in the near future.

Why train 50 young lads over 6 years when only 2% will make the grade?

Because if one of those young uns turns out to be Alan Shearer he will play for the club all his career thus saving the club 15 million quid further down the line. Likewise if we had signed a young Carrick I'm sure he would have stuck with us for a while.

..... and what happens if every Club adopts your approach Dave LeF? There will be no "top players" to poach, that what.

IMHO, the most successful Clubs will continue to be those who are most successful at developing their own talent, rather than the odd opportunist following your proposed strategy.

SOMEONE has to produce the players, why not the big clubs with the right environment and quality of coaches?

We'd save a lot on the wage bill as well and make it more possible to have the correct mix of home grown talent and top players, whatever country the top players come from.

DF, Your thinking mirrors the board's thinking and I'm sorry to say, I think it's seriously flawed. Apart from the general responsibility that clubs like NUFC have to develop players for the futute of the game, there are all sorts of conisderations. Firstly, everywhere you look in the PL, you see evidence that the best sides are based on sound youth policies and all of these clubs hold on to their players - do you see the Man Utd youths rushing off at the first chance? No. Because Man U can offer them things that players want. Secondly, we have tried to buy in and managed f...k all from it. Also, youth players do tend to feel somde loyalty to the club thar developed them. How many of our youth players have behaved like Domi or Goma. The argument is endless..

Youth development should not be seen as purely speculative, it should be a way of getting young hopefuls off the playstation & fill their lungs full of air. I think this kind of project could get some lottery funding; it benefits the community at large. I am not stoutist but there seem to be a load of fat kids now.

Lottery funding? For crying out loud Tony, don't spoon-feed them another excuse to defer the investment in the Academy!
