Are people less allergic to Maine Coons than other breeds?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Maine Coon Cats : One Thread

We love cats but are highly allergic to them. Since asthma can be a problem with some family members, we need to be careful. We just heard that somone has Maine Coons and has had no problems though she's usually allergic to other cats.

Does anyone have experiences related to allergies/asthma and Maine Coons?

Does anyone know of other cat breeds that minimize or eliminate the allergy/asthma problem? Thanks in advance for your responses.

Any cat with hair will usually cause symptoms in an allergic person. A HEPA air filter, not letting the cat into your bedrooms, and daily brushing the cat will help.

Hi Val-

My family has six cats including a wonderful Maine Coon named Bailey. My daughter's best friend is very allergic to cats and has to take medication when she comes to our house. My husband's Father has three Bengals, that he brings with him when he visits from New England. My daughters friend Rachel has absolutely no problem picking up and cuddling the Bengals. She can hold them, and rub her face on them and they do not bother her at all. Bengals do not produce the dander that most cats produce. First though, find out if you are allergic to cat "dander" or cat saliva. The latter is what most people are allergic too.

Hello Val I suggest you visit a Maine Coon breeder and see what effect the cats have on you. A girl who could never have cats because of allergies discovered through visiting that she was NOT allergic to Maine Coons. She has two of my cats and has had no symptoms over 3 years plus and loves them dearly and is very happy.
