Hate to admit it (#1) but the Mackems blatantly woz robbed of a winning goal during injury time. Refereeing incompetence just gets me proverbial goat, whoever the incompetentees. Apropos of that, the Mackems current stint as victims of dodgy decisions seems to me balanced by the unfeasible good luck they had at the opening of the season beginning Arse at the SoL. In their case the refereeing decisions do indeed seem to be evening themselves out over the course of the season. For some reason that adage doesn't apply to us: we've been stuck on the same plateau of umpirical excrement since Rennie sent off Shearer almost two seasons ago.

Hate to admit it (#2) but I've almost warmed to John Gregory over his post-match comments. Accused Don Hutchinson of stealing Heskey's roller skates. Top comment.

Gutted for them (er, not). But I agree with the comments regarding Wiggy Lodge. Under normal circumstances it would have been an absolutely disgraceful decision. But under tonight's circumstances...........

The Mackem had his arm round James. I know James was falling already and the arm never touched him but as Screach says in the context of the game seems a fair decision to me.

At first sight it looked like a foul to me. replay showed otherwise. Can't blame the ref on that one.

The pundits on Sky after the match drew up what purported to be a Lodge-eye view of the incident which showed a clear line of vision between him and the "foul". If that's the case I'm not sure that he wasn't to blame.

Apropos of referees in general, I'm coming to the opinion that scientific research should now be focused toward creating ten or so clones of Paul Durkin and/or that bald Italian ref and having them in charge of every game.

Colina is under constant suspicion in Serie A where he makes some quite extraordinary decisions (along with half his colleagues). Not sure if we could afford his "impartiality" just now.

Fair enough. I'll just make that 10 Durkins.

I heartily endorse the system in Italy, mind. They have chosen the top sides behind closed doors and make sure that all teams genuinely in the title race but with European distractions get plenty of help from the ref if they need it. They won't tolerate crap like S*****land floating up the league and causing potential embarassment by showing the country up in Europe...remember Blackburn in the European Cup?

They have recognized that the style of football at the heighest level is totally different from that needed to slap a bunch of cloggy thugs back into a lower division. All the time your sides are weighted down with the kind of players needed to protect your more skillfull players from these neanderthals you will not be able to reach your true level and give fans what they want which is anything but Route 1 bollocks.

It might seem a bit unfair, but if we adopted a similar approach then lightweight but skilled midfields like ours would be protected by refs from the humiliating beatings at the hands of the crap sides who have profited at our expense. Watching Zago calmly slapping the ball out of the danger area against one of Italy's lesser sides within three yards of the approving ref was merely a sign of Italian refs wanting to ensure that the Italian sides in Europe will be of the heighest calibre.

Maybe the 24carat gold watches Roma gave all the refs and the cars that Juve sent them may have had something to do with it as well :-)

I'm such a sad footy addict that I often watch the Nationwide games on Sly TV. There, I've said it - can't tell you how good it feels to have finally come out of the closet!

It may just be my enfeebled imagination, but the officiating standards seem much better than in the PL, and there seems to be rather less belly-aching and histrionics from the players.

There aren't as many manure-esque prima donnas in the Nationwide which might explain the latter phenomenon, however I wonder why the officiating appears to be of a better standard?

I even recall Urinal Rennie looking an excellent referee before he was promoted to the PL, from where he was removed at the first available opportunity as a convicted bone-head. Curious.
