favorite tv show

What is it? Mine is Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda, starring Kevin Sorbo.

Just kidding. It's really VIP.

Just kidding. Actually, it's... it's... well, I don't know. I'm going to say that it must be the Simpsons, since it's the only show I catch on a semi-regular basis. But I'd love to hear your favorites.

Titus...reminds me of my dysfunctional family. I never miss it! The 70's Show is my second favorite. I have the word out--don't call me on Tuesday between 8-9 p.m.--I'm watching my shows!

-- Anonymous, March 05, 2001

Titus is good. Reminds me of my family, also. Since I'm usually up late, I enjoy watching (usually just listening because I'm on the web checking things out before I go to bed) Third Rock. I like the Living Eden series and other nature stuff on PBS. TV basically sucks. ("The reason it's called a 'medium' is because so little of it is 'rare' or 'well done'" I can't remember who said that, but it's basically true. Bread and Circuses for the masses. Even the so-called "hard- hitting" news shows are patsies for their advertisers.

The Sopranos. Last night was an exciting night in Casa de Robyn.

The other night, though, I discovered the Oxygen network. I know it's the Oprah channel, and that's why I never gave it a look. But there was this British cartoon on, and it fascinated me. The Oxygen channel could become an addiction to fill the spot where Temptation Island once was.

I always forget to watch new shows that I like, such as Popstars and Grosse Point and Popular... but I rarely miss a 90210 rerun. And, as I mentioned in the Hoity Toity thread, I love Fraiser... there's some excellent writing on that show.

Law & Order, hands down. I bummed because I think I've gotten to the point where I've seen them all.

I loved Party of Five too.

The Sopranos is currently rocking my world too, Robyn.

My household only recently discovered The Sopranos via the first season videotapes and damn, I came *this close* to ordering HBO last week so I could enjoy last night's season premiere! What a flat out fantastic show.

My favorite-show-that-I-actually-get-to-watch is called "That's Life" on CBS Saturday nights. In brief, it's about a 32-year-old undergrad and her family/friends/etc. Since I'm a 39-year-old undergrad with a family and friends, I gave it a whirl. Since CBS is notorious for launching fabulous shows and killing them off after half a season (I'm still bitter over "American Gothic" and "E-Z Streets"), I tried not to get emotionally involved-- but I'm afraid it's too late; what a lovely show.

I'm totally addicted to Will and Grace and Who's Line is it, Anyway ??

-- Anonymous, March 05, 2001

I have limited cable, which is still outrageous, but the show I wait all week for is ER. I like stuff on public radio/TV too.

-- Anonymous, March 05, 2001

"Will & Grace" never fails to crack me up. I especially love the Karen Walker character. So I watch it every time it's on. Other than that, I like "Friends" and "That '70s Show" the best. I have to admit that "Titus" is well done, but I don't like shows about dysfunctional families very much, so I don't watch it anymore. So long as there are reruns of "Seinfeld" in syndication, I will be watching it. I liked "Frasier" a lot until this season, when I just became sort of indifferent about it. That happened with "ER" a few years ago, too. And I never miss "Ally McBeal," so I can laugh along with Gwen's recap at mightybigtv.com. :-) (And if I can throw in a plug for a long-dead comedy series, I loved "Fawlty Towers," a very short-lived John Cleese and Connie Booth British sitcom.)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's corny at times, sometimes it makes me cry, but it really make me want to kick some ass. Angel. It's corny more than I can even tell you, and Cordelia's outfits make me cry! (ps my husband is divorcing me due to spousal abuse caused by watching girls in platforms slay vampires)

Also Survivor and any reality based show, just so I have something to talk about at work the next day. I am totally going to watch the new Fox show Boot Camp. I've been told I should have been a drill sergeant.

Hey, is this a personality test?

The Sopranos is number 1 on my list - I actually travelled to an ex's apartment to watch it cause none of my lame friends have HBO. I like Sex in the City too, although sometimes I get really bored with the whining about men. It's like, please, having a boyfriend is not the end all, be all of a happy life, jeez.

I like looking at the outfits, I guess.

Other than that - I like South Park (sometimes I even download it and watch it at work), Ab Fab, Discovery Health shows (hey at least I'm not THAT fucked up!) and any show, commercial, cartoon, etc with a cat in it.

Case in point: I caught myself watching this infomercial with a stupid, dildo-looking air filter from the Sharper Image JUST BECAUSE there is a 2 second clip of a cat. Obsess much?

Robyn: I've been a fan of that British cartoon you mentioned (Pond Life) for a couple of years now but, of course, it's not always shown here and it was a big surprise to find it on Oxygen last night - I'd never heard of that channel, but there it was. Pond Life was carried on the Canadian cartoon network for a while but they ran out of shows - I'm not sure if it's possible to find any of the earlier episodes but if you liked last night's you'd definitely like those.

The West Wing, guys. Hands down. It's the best written, acted, and edited drama on network TV right now, and I'm too cheap to pay for HBO, so I'm inclined to say it's the best thing on television. If Aaron Sorkin needed a kidney, I'd give it to him.

Also: Will & Grace, The Simpsons, Third Watch, and (I'm ashamed of myself for this one) Golden Girls reruns on Lifetime.

-- Anonymous, March 05, 2001

I forget to watch TV. I enjoy it when I remember, but I'm out of practice. When I do remember, I get all giddy watching the Simpsons-- I love that show. I also like X-Files. I was annoyed that I missed it this week, as I saw it last week and thought I had missed the "cliffhanger". I was set straight and now I'm sad I missed The Lone Gunmen instead. I was curious about it.

I like cartoons and documentaries and movies. Somewhere along the line I became an adult and started actually caring about political stuff (was up until an ungodly hour watching Presidential election results and cursing Floridians) and PBS art performances (you know, the ones that hire that stage whisper guy from golf tournaments to murmur the blow-by- blow plot points of whatever ballet you're enduring on the little screen).

-- Anonymous, March 05, 2001

I think Gilmore Girls is wonderful. Also West Wing and Buffy. Those 3 are the ones I try not to miss. Anything else, I can watch it on reruns.

-- Anonymous, March 05, 2001

Oz. But, being in Canada, I have to wait months for the new season. (Luchina, I challenge thee to a clebrity death match for the hand of Ryan O'Reilly, sociopath that he is. He's hot.) Need satellite dish.

My kid loves, loves, loves Malcolm in the Middle. Loves it. He's FIVE, but as soon as that theme song starts he's hopping on the furniture screaming the song at the top of his lungs, dancing around. Now, you have to know my kid. Like I said, he's only five and he has an autistic disorder and barely even talks, let alone sings. He initiated his very first conversation EVER last week with another little guy at school ("Why you wear bracelet? You sick? You no eat sugar? No WAY!") and yet, there he is, every Sunday night waiting for Malcolm and singing along. I think he identifies with being a genius in a family of morons, but who knows? :)

-- Anonymous, March 05, 2001

"Fawlty Towers" Oh yeah. Very funny. I can't believe no one in this group likes "Third Rock". It's American Monty Python or close to it.

-- Anonymous, March 05, 2001

I have so many shows that I refer to as "The Show" that no one takes me seriously anymore when I say "The Show is on".

Law and Order, Homicide: Life in the Streets (I still watch the reruns religiously), Prime Suspect, Trading Spaces (cracks me up), Iron Chef, Seventh Heaven (I love crap), Gilmore Girls. Coronation Street.

I'd be watching The Sopranos if I had the special cable but damn it if I payed for the extra package with The Movie Network then I'd never stop watching tv. Thankfully I have a tv/vcr combo on my desk. Allows me to work and watch my shows at the same time.

Bubba, I love Third Rock from the Sun, it's the funniest TV show that I've seen since Mork and Mindy :)

-- Anonymous, March 06, 2001

It really is, isn't it, Jane? I love it. The ensemble comedy is great. I can't make up my mind who I like more: Sally or Harry, my two favorites.

And hey, Milla...when my kids were little I never missed Rocky and Bullwinkle. The dialogue was writen to be perceived on two levels, one adult, one juvenile.

-- Anonymous, March 06, 2001

Actually, I watch very little tv but when I do I love Third Rock. I'm almost too embarressed to admit this, but I also love to watch Hercules on Toon Disney with my kids. Granted, a big part of that is due to the idea that two kids snuggling with their mommy = good times, but the show is actually written for both kids and adults. I really enjoy their takes on some of the famous characters of Greek Mythology. One example is that Homer, instead of being an epic poet, is a reporter for a sleezy tabloid. And for you other fans of Third Rock, the guy who plays Harry is also the voice of Hercules' nerdy best friend. What a hoot! Man, I guess I better go do some adult stuff right now!

-- Anonymous, March 06, 2001

Sorry, Bubba, but I think "Third Rock" is the worst show on TV. I've never understood why it's such a hit.

-- Anonymous, March 06, 2001

Smack the Pony - Bravo (Doon rules!) CSI - love those camera shots Law and Order - although it's been kinda lame this year Sopranos - who else was miffed about the editing blocks for commercials? 100 Center Street - A&E Sex and the City West Wing I know I'm forgetting something....

-- Anonymous, March 06, 2001

I'm telling you, Deb, we really can't let our kids meet. My daughter dances to "Malcolm in the Middle", too. That's how we got started watching it, I'm a big They Might Be Giants fan and the theme song caught my ear, and she started dancing.

I'd be interested in an invite to the First Annual Ryan O'Reilly Death Match thing y'all have got going on. When you beat yourselves unconscious I'll stand by to collect the prize for the winner.

Bravo's got some cool shows on -- there's one now called "Cold Feet" that's a sort of soap opera with better acting. And "The Awful Truth" when it's not a repeat.

I'm fat, Mary Ellen. I'll just sit on you 'til you give up. My husband finds my Oz crushes pretty disturbing, like I'm one of those women who falls in love with Benetton ads of death row inmates and marries them. (No, not the poster, silly.) "Deb, they're horrible, evil, characters!" Yeahhhhh, and hot. Oh, and our kids would either recognize a kindred soul and be buddies for life or hate each other on sight. It would be interesting. :)

Ohhh, Coronation Street. I am so hooked. My son's afternoon aide drops him off at 3:31, right as soon as it ends. She's smart, that woman. "Is your show done?" She asks.

I forgive you, Paul. Hey, who said Republicans had to have a sense of humor, anyway? My idea of fun is duct-taping unruly children into a corner.

-- Anonymous, March 06, 2001

Thanks for your forgiveness, Bubba. At least we agree on "Fawlty Towers." :-)

-- Anonymous, March 06, 2001

I guess my favorites are Buffy the Vampire Slayer (corny, but they get it right every once and awhile), South Park, Will & Grace, Survivor (oh, I *know*), Daria, and my new pick: Ed. Corniest, dorkiest show on TV. If it was a food, it would taste a lot like Sweet 'N Low. I still love it.

-- Anonymous, March 06, 2001

I love some crappy tv! I watch Ally McBeal even though since shortly after the show started, I've begun feeling as if Ally is a friend that I used to like but don't anymore but I don't know how to stop being friends with her so I reluctantly watch it, and roll my eyes far far back in my head and wait patiently for Gwen's recap so I can feel vindicated in hating it like I do. I used to love 90210 and Melrose, until they got too ridiculous. I like Sex & The City even though I think those women are retarded. All of them. And no one dresses like that. And I'm in New York. I love the Sopranos, but not Oz, because I don't want to go to prison, but I don't mind knowing some people that are in the mob. I like Malcolm in the Middle a lot, Friends, Seinfeld, Law & Order, Little House on the Prairie reruns. I have never watched the West Wing. I'm not going to either. I like Will & Grace and ER, even though it's getting pretty bad this season.

I've never seen Andromeda or VIP - and I don't have to watch the Simpsons cause it gets quoted to me a lot.

-- Anonymous, March 07, 2001

The West Wing, yeah boyyyyy!

Also, I have to watch Survivor.

And on Saturdays? IRON CHEF! Iron Chef fscking ROCKS, y'all! On FoodTV, check it out, you WILL submit. Just to listen to dubbing from Japanese to Engrish is fantastic.

Guilty Pleasure? Boston Public, on Fox. I cannot BELIEVE this show, but I am strangely compelled to watch. My secret fantasy would to be principal for a day on that show, in which Principal Jonny's Catholic school upbringing would contribute to opening a institutional size can o' whoopass on those spoiled little punks...

-- Anonymous, March 08, 2001

Paul - I just read your posting about Third Rock - THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU. I have always though it to be so lame.

-- Anonymous, March 08, 2001

Building up courage after the first reply on hoity toity-ness, I would have to agree that the West Wing is fantastic. It's only just started here, but I am totally hooked. We also have a show called Boston Law here, its a documentary that shows us just how your crazy judiciary system works. Fascinating. Other British hits include Big Brother, sadly departed, Frasier, Sex in the City, and Popstars, but I never really got into it. And of course, Absolutely Fabulous, (soon to be translated into American). God Bless the BBC

-- Anonymous, March 09, 2001

AbFab was Americanized - it was called Sybil. Bette Midler tried to make an American version before that, and it didn't make it.

-- Anonymous, March 09, 2001

GForce -- Big ol' word on Homicide: Life on the Street. I miss the living hell out of that show.

I'm so, so ashamed that I really enjoyed watching Survivor the other night. Friends was a rerun, dammit!

I still watch Law & Order most weeks, but it's in a sad state of decline. Almost as sad as ER is these days. I usually watch Sports Night (more Aaron Sorkin, 'cause I just can't get enough) on Thursday nights instead.

I watch more TV than a shut-in. Someone should take it away from me.

-- Anonymous, March 09, 2001

SweetJane, you're most welcome. :-)

I remember the talk about the Americanized AbFab... wasn't it produced by Roseanne (Barr/Arnold)? I remember when I first heard of it I thought any American version would be much too blunt. Almost every American-made sitcom is repetitious setup-gag, setup-gag, setup-gag, ad nauseum.

Yes, "Friends" was a rerun last night, but it was a great episode, the one in which the young Monica gets slim and cuts off Chandler's toe with a large kitchen knife. :-)

So much to do in real life. So much time wasted watching fantasy. I wonder what people do for life where there is no television? Does TV affect your mental moods? Do you really get anything out of TV? How many actually feel TV characters are kindred spirits? How many learn anything about themselves or their neighbors/friends watching TV? Does TV enhance your life? Would you die without TV? Could you go on Survivor without TV? Are your children learning anything from TV besides violence and what to buy? Does TV influence your life style? Does TV influence your childs life style? I personally think TV sucks bigtime. There used to be "real" dramas on like Omnibus and GE Theater. Westinghouse Playhouse and Fireside Theater. And talk about perspective. How many realize that what you are watching has little to do with what the rest of the world thinks. How many realize that what we watch on American TV has little news from the rest of the world. TV. What a waste. How many feel that what happened in Santana High School has no roots in what we are "taught" by TV? How many think children and young adults "know" the difference between fantasy or gratuitous violence seen on TV and aren't influenced in the least? How are our childrens( and our) sexuality influenced by TV? How does TV teach respect for women in male children and young adult males? The Man Show? How does TV influence how young women feel about themselves and their roles in life and society? James
