info on flashes

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

From what I have read from previous posts, Canons 380 and 420 ex flashes dont give very good results when they are mounted to a rebel 2000 do to the limited functions of the camera and lack of manual settings on the flashes. The only flash that would give good results is the 550ex, do to its manual mode. Unfortunately this flash is out of my reach price wise. Can anybody recommend a good flash at about the same price as the 380ex so I can take advantage of the E-TTL metering system from the camera.

Answers

If you want E-TTL capabilities in the 380ex price range you've got 2 choices: 1) 380ex, or 2) 420ex. The 380 has been discontinued but there may be a few still in stock somewhere. The 420 is it's replacement.

Some third party manufacturers may have an E-TTL capable flash but I doubt that, even if it exists, it would be in that price range.

The biggest problem that people have noted with R2K and flashes other than a 550EX is lack of FEC. That can be dealt with by just locking a focus point on a near gray object and activating FEL. The R2K has FEL, right? If not, always focus on a near gray object in the frame. I have found that caucasion faces have the right amount of reflectance (at 0 FEC) for my tastes.

The 420 or the 380 will be fine for you.

FYI Yes the Rebel 2000 (and G) have FEL.

Hy in Italy recently Metz has made flashes, less expensive, which work in E-ttl; for example one model is Metz AF24 or Metz AF34 i don't remember well; its cost (125$) is half the cost of the 380EX(250 $).

I would like to thank you for your responses. I purchased a Canon 420ex yesterday for $319.00CND. I was considering the 550EX but I thought it was pricy at$660.00CND before taxes. I think the 420EX will serve me well.
