This is just a tradeoff we're willing to make. It turns out that, in practice, trolls are the price of worthwhile free discussion, and banning either one bans the other. They are opposite sides of the same coin.

As a suggestion, you might check what happens inside regimes that are slow to learn this lesson. Very educational.

What for Pete's sake is a troll? Wifey used to buy these damn dolls that had this stupid look on their face and the hair was all fuzzed up like it went thru the washin machine. And then she'd hang em in the tractor cab for good luck she said. But I'd crawl up there and be staring at one of them Goddamn things and liked to shit my pants when I got my eyes focused. She don't do it anymore and she called them trolls.

A troll is a person that goes trolling the forums, looking to push buttons and upset people. The best defense against a troll is not to give them the time of day.
