World Bank to provide $500 million loan to Russia

The Associated Press

MOSCOW (March 2, 2001 3:09 p.m. EST http://www.nandotimes.com) - The World Bank will provide about $500 million in loans to Russia this year for programs on combatting AIDS and tuberculosis, as well as other projects, the bank's envoy to Moscow said Friday.

The World Bank representative to Moscow, Julian Schweitzer, made the announcement after a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Valentina Matviyenko.

About $150 million of the money will go to fund programs for combatting the spread of AIDS and tuberculosis, Matviyenko said. Both diseases have been spreading fast in Russia amid inadequate medical care and a lack of preventive measures.

Another $80 million will be spent on a project to help people relocate from the impoverished regions in Russia's far north, where the closure of factories and energy shortages have left people without jobs, electricity or heat - and without money to leave.

Some of the rest of the funds will be used for transportation projects, she said, without providing details.
