The Glory Game

*As mentioned in my previous post re midfield, Forgot about it at first but each Friday night lately Scots Tv have been showing the Glory Game, a look at the Celtic (race) roots in the success of English Football. When the presenter opened by saying that in the 50`s the top teams in the country were Arsenal, Newcastle and Man Utd I left the pooter and was in like Flynn. Arsenal were first, mainly the Welsh connection of Jack Kelsey and Wally Barnes,

With a magnificient rendition worthy of Min at his best the spotlight fell on our lot. Ronnie Simpson who never looks any older was interviewed and he was just brilliant. Film footage of him as a 15 year old schoolboy playing in goal was shown,he was 5`8" at the time, big for his age but he did not get any bigger. Ronnie said when he arrived at Newcastle (cue shot of Tyne Bridge) to take over from Jack Fairbrother he felt he was home . All the goals from the Cup ,a thank you from Joe, Joe Harvey, and mention of the laid back style of Big Frank Brennan led to a five minute spiel on Bobby Mitchell, how his style of play, and dribbling ability put Wally Barnes and Jimmy Meadows out of the equation at Wembley. Top man Ronnie.

LR the man Utd part was very tastefully done , concentrating on the aftermath of Munich, but mainly of the contribution that Jimmy Murpy put into your club. It brought back a lot of memories for me as I can vividly remember some of the games , little Ernie Taylor a midfield powerhouse of his day LOL, playing for you to help out amongst others. The poignant message from Sir Matt from his hospital bed in Munich played over the tannoys at Old Trafford. All in all a very enjoyable half hour , they say that football has a habit of kicking you in the teeth when your down , it also can be uplifting to , realise this may appeal more to Jonno,Pit Bull, 50`s fan, Clarky, Floridean ,True and young Screach , it is the Glory Game

BTW, I did not realise that there were a fair amount of the fairer sex all adorned with head scarves who followed football in the fifties just an observation from the crowd shots shown
