Question about avi codecs

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

i was curious, before i start tampering with things, on some avi codecs (lets say divx for example). in it's configuration it will allow you to change the data rate (kilobytes per second)if i increase this number will, besides im assuming making the file bigger, would it also increase the quality as well? Normally for any avi codec i always have the quality setting for 100%, but i am now very curious if in addition to that would increasing the data rate boost the quality even more? thanks

The primary quality factor in DivX is the Data Rate. The more, the better quality (this is relevant to the Low Motion codec). The level of data rate is independent of the resolution, and the same amount of data will be written for a 352x240 and 720x540 frame. Therefore, it is a matter of resolution/data rate combination that will determine the final quality of the movie. For good results, try using 512x384 resolution with data rate of no less than 850KB per second.

thanks for the info, i went ahead and blasted the data rate to 6000 (its highest) and a 34min file (which was what i needed it for) took up about 1.53 gis this way. But thats fine with me. The quality was awesome and i still had it set to 100% for quality and was able to fit me file under 2 gigs--
