"MS Found in a Bottle" has a number of levels, of course. On the surface, it is a tale of cosmic horror, and a highly accomplished one at that. But it is also an allegory. Since an allegory, by definition, concerns the human condition, we can ask the question of whether or not or to what extent our lives are driven along on an undercurrent, etc. The allegorical meaning becomes especially interesting, I think, when we consider the meaing of the whirlpool and its implications of a process of individuation followed by (re) unification.
