Reports on Dyer and Cort injury situation.

Teamtalk are reporting that Dyer is to have an operation to finally sort out the cyst in his shin. Why has this taken so long to detect????????

Cort is targeting the smoggies match as his return, if everything goes well in his step up in fitness training.

With Cort's fitness being so fragile, and the risk of a further breakdown so worrying, I cannot understand for one moment why there is such a panic to get him back playing - presumably without even any match practice. This seems totally and utterly barmy to me.
IMO, he should work on his fitness exclusively with a view to being fully fit for the resumption in July. As it is we look like taking further injudicious and entirely unecessary risks with yet another major asset.

Regarding Dyer, I still don't fully understand what is wrong with him. While there has again been talk of shin splints, the report on Teamtalk reverts to the bone cyst problem that was ultimately revealed a few weeks ago. They say the cyst is to be surgically removed.

As I indicated a while ago, I have a benign cyst at the head of my femur, which doesn't cause me any bother, and was only identified in a routine x-ray looking for a possible minor hernia. As a result of this, I did a little research.
Always assuming the cyst is not indicative of a more sinister cause of denegeneration of the bone, which I'm sure will have been checked out - if the diameter of the cyst is large relative to the diameter of the bone itself, it can significantly weaken the bone - causing pain and indeed possible fracture. In this case, the cyst can be removed surgically by draining it, and filling the 'hole' with a bone graft. I'm assuming from what's been said that this is what they are going to do with KD, but as usual the communication from the Club is vague to non-existent, so who really knows what is going on - after all, he is only our prize asset so of course nobday is really all that interested!!

Adding more fuel to the fire NUFC.com are saying that Dyer will actually require to operations and significant rest, therefore ruling him out for the rest of the season. Like other injuries this season the loss of Dyer will see a difference in our formation. We will possibly be more balanced, if only Robson would pick Glass or even Bonvin on the left wing to give us Genuine width it may take a bit of the pressure off the central lads to constantly look for the harder pass through the middle as opposed to the release to the flank.

I share your concerns regarding Cort but I feel the club really have delayed his comeback this time in accordance with the specialists and are not rushing him back. I think they for once have learnt a lesson with Cort. I don't mind Ameobi playing on as long as he's fit, it's only when Shearer or Ameobi picks up another injury that things get a bit thin.

Well, if Dyer does indeed require a bone graft, this will take considerable time to heal, and I couldn't see him him playing again this season.
Teamtalk are suggesting he could be fit for the Bradford game at the end of the month, which seems supremely optimistic. However, this is just in keeping with the lack of real information on the nature of his condition.

Thought I better check the Official Site to make sure there is nothing substantive there about YKD's condition, seeing as how I'm criticising them.

The Home page lists an item/link "Kieron Dyer Injury Update". When you click on that it takes you to the date- ordered news articles - unfortunately, no articles for today have been posted, including the mythical update on Dyers injury. I give in.
Tossers!

I cannot understand for one moment why there is such a panic to get him back playing - presumably without even any match practice.

Surely we'd never do that - expect a player to start a match who hadn't even had run out for months? I mean we wouldn't do that with Alan Shea-...oh.
How many more players are going to attempt to 'defy the doctors' only to have 'injury setbacks' before someone working in that treatment room gets the sack? (No testicle jokes please)

I can't say I'd be surprised to hear that Acuna will play on Saturday, Bravely insisting he's okay before limping off in the 15th minute with a problem that rules him out for the rest of the season.

Surely to goodness they have to have learned by CC's abortive attempt at an early return. How much did that set him back? I agree - give the lad time to recover (which he appears to be having) and give him a run out in a few selected Resorves games. If that proves successful, then, and only then should he be considered for the 1st team. Shola has proved an able stand-in and would likely have not got the chance, and hence internation recognition, if CC and/or Shearer hadn't been injured. He did well on Wednesday, as he has for us when he's played. Don't rush CC back at the expense of (i)CC and (ii) SA.

Official site (with date 29/2/2001?), Niall & Biffa and the Chron all carry the story that Dyer's season is over. He needs an operation now and another in two weeks time.

-- Anonymous, March 01, 2001

Well that's really weird, Cliff - I've just checked again on the OS and there are still no news articles listed after 28/2????

Actually, I e-mailed the Club just before lunch and asked them to get something posted, but I don't seem to be able to see it. Very curious!

I read the article about lunchtime, although it's about as comprehensive as a Grammar School!

Just for yo uClarky:

KIERON DYER INJURY UPDATE

Following another spell of leg pains and discomfort recently, Kieron Dyer had a further scan yesterday. This latest scan has revealed that an operation is necessary to remove the cyst on his shin. This will rule the player out of the team for several weeks. United Manager Bobby Robson said:

"This is very disappointing for Kieron and Newcastle United. That said, we can now remedy the situation for him which is the most important thing.

"We are extremely sad that we are losing his services at such a crucial time for the club but hopefully the operation will enable us to have Kieron back fully fit as soon as possible."

So are we now going to say to Solano that he plays in the roaming role? I fecking hope not becuase we'll have even less width if he does that.

Come on Robson, select a balanced side for once, and don't shoehorn players into positions they obviously are not comfortable in.

-- Anonymous, March 01, 2001

Didn't YBR say that if he goes roaming again it'll be over his (YBR's) dead body and would cost So-long-o 25% of his wages?

Actually, if YBR does want a roaming player behind the front two, surely he'd pick Gallacher. Not that I would, mind you.

More injury worries for Newcastle from Sportstalk

Bobby Robson's midfield injury problems continue. Following the anouncement that Keiron Dyers season is over. It looks as though only Nol Solano and Rob Lee will be Newcastle's only fit senior midfielders. Gary Speed and Clarence Acuna are out of action this weekend with calf and groin problems, and today Christian Bassedas has been added to the injury list, suffering from ear ache. With Warren Barton suspended for the Everton game, Jamie MClen and Diego Gavilan have been drafted into United's rapidly shrinking squad.

-- Anonymous, March 01, 2001

That's not very funny Rik

-- Anonymous, March 01, 2001

It's not too bad, he can play Cordone on the left wing and Gallacher on the right and still have Super Glass as a sub.

-- Anonymous, March 01, 2001

An earache? Gawd, I have this awful vision of Big Dunc hopping around the pitch on one crutch with one arm in a sling scoring for fun Saturday with McClen's perpetual screams of "Yes!" turning to "Oh no!" Not that I'm pessimistic or anything. ;-)

-- Anonymous, March 01, 2001

I have a solution:

Drop Shearer back into midfield and play Ameobi and Lua x2 up front.

-- Anonymous, March 01, 2001

.....and you think bringing in LueyLooi in strengthens the team then Screach, eh?

-- Anonymous, March 01, 2001

Jamie MClen and Diego Gavilan have been drafted into United's rapidly shrinking squad
We'er a bliddy shortarsed team as it is. Anymore shrinking and we'll be playing bliddy midgets.

-- Anonymous, March 01, 2001

Well, it's a toss-up between Looby Loo and Cor Blimey. To be honest, I haven't a clue. I actually think Shearer will play up front with Shola (a nice sort of symetry - AS/SA or SA/AS). I was just thinking of who we have available that (a) could hold a place in m/f and (b) has some prescence. Let's hope Rob Lee is fit (I think he is but there's still another day's training to go) and can have one of his good days.

If AS did drop back, then Gallacher could renew his goal-scoring form (so the best we might hope for is a goalless draw).

-- Anonymous, March 01, 2001

AS would give us alot more bite in midfield than most of the 'midfielders' we've currently got, including the injured! I've long thought Shearer should drop back. Unfortunately he'll probably never see things that way. Maybe Speed can have a word and convince him that being a midfielder doesn't mean you give up scoring goals.

-- Anonymous, March 01, 2001

......as long as Rob Lee doesn't try to convince him ;-) Gaan on Rob, prove iz wrang this weekend!

-- Anonymous, March 01, 2001

From MiArse, Midfield Magpies going down like flies.

Bobby Robson's injury problems get bigger by the hour.EIGHT midfielders are now out of action. As well as Keiron Dyer being out of action. Gary Speed has a torn calf. Acuna a damaged groin. Bassedas out with an ear infection. Stephen Glass has a stiff neck.Brian Kerr and Stuart Green both have dislocated shoulders. Deigo Gavilan has a bruised elbow and Robert Lee still has a virus. This leaves only Nolberto Solano as Bobby Robsons only fit midfielder. And he is reported as having already booked a flight to Miami.

-- Anonymous, March 01, 2001

Bassedas - ear infection? Whatever next. This is not funny. Oh well, est change my team pick!

-- Anonymous, March 01, 2001

I'm half expecting that donkey Farcelino to come down with foot and mouth. How much will the government pay in compensation?

-- Anonymous, March 01, 2001

Foot and Mouth? No he had that a while back and was given a vaccine.

So he can't use that excuse again.

Saying as our season's basically over in terms of getting anything, we should try people like Gavilan / Bonvin etc. Gavilan is a regular for Paraguay so he can't be that bad can he? It's worth a try, I remember his scoring a cracker last season (against Coventry was it?)

At least the younger players should have more bottle.

According to a story on icNCL, BR reckons Dyer is likely to be out for 5 months and will be lucky to be fit for pre-season training in July.

Cort has apparently trained with the first team squad this week, and is hopeful of returning for the Boro game on the 17th.

-- Anonymous, March 02, 2001

Dyer seems to have written the season off as well. He says he'll be concentrating on getting fit so he can be firing on all cylinders for us next season.

I just wish we could say to him, there's the right wing berth, it's yours because Nobby's too unreliable both in performances and appearances. I know it won't happen though!

-- Anonymous, March 02, 2001

What really concerns me about this statement from BR is that Dyer may not even be ready for the start of next season - the curse is rolling into next season already!

-- Anonymous, March 02, 2001

Plus, if he'd had the operation a month ago, instead of being flogged to death, he'd likely have been available for preseason.

Looks like Acuna is the next old nag to get flogged. Supposedly he'll be asked to play tomorrow even though he hasn't trained all week due to his achilles problem. On the up side...as long as he's injured he can't be flying off to play for Chile. It worked with Nobby, didn't it....oh. Nevermind. :-/
