200/1.8 USM Help Please!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Hello,

I just bought the great 200/1.8 lens. But I have a problem. The drop in filter adapter takes only 48mm filters. These are hard to get.

Can also sells the 52mm adapter which is used in the newer IS lenses.

My question is if I buy the 52mm adapter, will I be able to use that with my 200/1.8 lens? Will it work with it?

Thanks!

Hi Sol,

I have both the 300mm f2.8 IS lens and the 200mm f1.8 lens and unfortunately the 200mm won't take the bigger filter adapter.

In Germany I usually bought my filters at second hand camera fairs (there are filter retailers who sell them new) and usually I found what I was looking for.

Does B&H not hold them?

Sandra,

Thanks so much for your quick response.

That is a shame that it won't take the 52mm adapter. A bugger. Looks like I will have to find 48mm filters...

May I ask you how you find the 200/1.8 compares to your 300/2.8 IS?

Doesn't IS degrade quality, since it makes use of many more elements?

Thanks!

Both are brilliant lenses. I used to shoot animals with the 70-200 f2.8 before (which is not a bad lens either) but the 300mm/200mm lenses are incredibly sharp. Even with a Canon 2x converter I get good results with the 200mm lens.

I cannot imagine IS degrades quality, it is a wonderful lens.
