He was born Edgar Poe on January 19, 1809 in Boston. Following the death of his Mother in December 1811, he was taken in as a foster child by John and Frances Allan of Richmond, Virginia. He was never formally adopted but was baptised on January 7, 1812 and christened Edgar Allan Poe by the Reverend John Buchanan of Richmond. John and Frances Allan never had children of their own but John remarried in 1830 following the death of Frances Keeling Allan and had children by his second wife, Louisa Patterson. John Allan died on March 27, 1834 and Edgar was excluded from his will.
