More Promise

I suppose if we are to sign anyone it is going to be in the 'promising' bracket but what is the point in signing this lad as a Central Defender when we've got Beharall, S Caldwell, G Caldwell and Hughes in that bracket??

NEWCASTLE UNITED are taking a first hand look at Leyton Orient`s promising central defender Simon Downer. Toon boss Bobby Robson, always keen to plunder the lower divisions for young talent, has been alerted by the centre back`s form, and is keen to challenge Tottenham in any race for his signature.

Although Downer`s training stint at St James` Park will only be a short one, he is due back in East London before the end of the week, it will give him an opportunity to show he is capable of performing at a higher level.

The trial is described as a private arrangement between the management of both clubs, but it shows that Robson is keen to keep tabs on the 19-year-old.

Spurs have already confirmed an interest in the Romford-born youngster, and they enjoy a decent relationship with Orient, but Newcastle are now very much in the hunt for his services, should his club decide to cash in on his talents.

Orient boss Tommy Taylor has gone on record as stating that he will not allow Downer to leave for less than £1 million.

And given the success we've had with the youngsters we've signed who've been connected with Tottenham (Lua-Lua and Brady) this seems a bit worrying, especially at £1million!!
