Advice needed for recent poodle illness

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Poodle Support Group : One Thread

I have owned Montana AKC registered since she was 7 weeks old. In three days she will be 9 years old. She has been a very healthy female. I have bred her twice, 7 total pups, 6 girls, one boy. I kept the runt of the second litter, her name is Scobey and she is 3 1/2. My girlfrined bought Montana's only son Scobey's brother, Joby. Joby came for a visit this past Thursday, Feb 24th, 2001. Montana was running up & down my stairs retrieveing her ball, Joby was retrieveing a squeeky toy. I heard a yelp and guessed that they collided. Montana never came back to play ball and wouldn't come on command. When I went to check on her she was limping and crying. I massaged her legs to see where she was hurt but found nothing wrong. She kept crying and was very clingy and needy. I fell asleep and awoke from a nightmare that she had drank motor oil. (only a dream) She was gone and was no where in the house. I have a fenced in back yard and a doggie door and went outside to look for her but on first try couldn't find her. I got dressed, grabbed a flashlight and heard her bark. She was curled up sleeping next to my house. She has never had this kind of behavior before. It was 3am and I called Georgia Vet Specialists. The graveyard shift vet there felt it was probably nothing and reccommended I wait till am and contact my regular vet. My gut made me drive there for a full physical exam. The doctor found nothing and guessed it was a minor injury. She prescribed Etogesic 150mg tabs #5 half a pill per day for 10 days. If after that time she still wasn't better I should get a referrel to see a surgeon! A few hours later Montana was still in pain and I called the vet again and was not pleased. I brought her to my vet Friday evening for a second opinion. He seemed to find some tenderness on her back and thought that that could have created the limp and the pain and the change of behavior. I gave Montana half a pill on Friday and half a pill on Saturday. She seemed to be gettting better so I didn't give her one today, Sunday. Now she is in pain again. I feel uncomfortable masking the symptoms and therefore will not give her another until I have more information. I will be calling my vet tomorrow with a lack of progress report. Perhaps someone on this list can help me? Ask questions, I am sure I have missed giving some important information that would help you to help me. Thanks! Hildee
