What strikes me Nick is the good fortune Liverpool have had this week with refereeing decisions.

After the farcical penalty/no-penalty situation against Roma that saw them through in the UEFA Cup, everything went for them today against gallant Birmingham, who must be utterly gutted to have lost on penalties after what had happened earlier.

On the penalty incident, there were actually two bad fouls committed by Pool players in the PA, the second of which resulted in the penalty decision. This was a knee-high tackle that crippled O'Connor and reduced him to a passenger for the rest of the game, reducing Birmingham to 10 men. Despite the ferocity and location of the challenge, AND the fact that a penalty was awarded, Henchoz didn't even get a yellow card, never mind the red card the challenge merited.

Then early on in ET, the same Pool player - who arguably shouldn't have even been on the pitch - clearly brought down Brum's Johnson in the area, and quite amazingly got away with it. Subsequently he was booked for elbowing another player, and therefore for the third time somehow avoided being sent off.

IMO Birmingham were absolutely robbed both by ill-fortune and bloody incompetent officiating.
