DV capture/encoding

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I just purchased a DV camcorder along with a firewire card. I was expecting to get 'perfect' or near perfect quality mpegs. However, the final product (using TMPG) is marginally (if that) better than capturing via a regular capture card using a S-VHS or standard 8mm source. Are there some settings I should be adjusting? When I say picture quality, I mean blockiness and sharpness of the video (not the greatest). No problems with choppiness. Thanks for any information!

Derek I think the expectation is a little high and yes there is little difference between DV source out thro a svcd connector to an analogue card v's the firewire baseline.

Untill you get involved with the likes of Premiere 6, the Main Concepts DV codec, the tweak to make P6 see it, avisynth and TMPGEnc build 12c there will be no light at the end of the tunnel. That mix will give the best you can achieve at this time with any SVCD within the restrictions of the specification.

Latest information is on my web site with several others providing information for all to use.
