DON'T EXPECT A TRIAL OF THIS CRIME FAMILY Sunday,February 25,2001

By STEVE DUNLEAVY

Immoral? Wrong? Filthy? All true, and ultimately, extremely smart.

That is, of course, if the accolade of smart is fitting praise for a crime family.

You see, as there is a Senate, congressional and federal probe in the Southern District into La Famiglia Clintonista, what will come of it?

Well, there will be leaks, page one stories and explosions of condemnation from all over.

But an indictment? Not unless you believe Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs are going to drop around for a cup of tea.

Let's start with the latest and go backwards - the elephant in the "other" White House, Hugh Rodham.

OK, we are told that he has a case of the shorts in walking-around money, so he hasn't paid back the $400,000 in fees to a con man and a major drug lord - not a small-time drug dealer, but a drug lord - Carlos Vignali.

Sure, "the elephant" will pay eventually. But do you think for a tiny second that money won't come back to him?

When you haul a couple of guys' asses out of jail, even bad guys, keep book and know what they owe you for their freedom.

And is it illegal? Not in the least.

Ethics boards can scream all they like. But a lawyer can charge whatever the traffic will bear. Just ask O.J. Simpson.

Hugh "The Elephant" Rodham did a great job for the crooks, even if he did a bad job for society.

He can keep the money now or get it back later, but the probers will have to prove that his gains in some way found its way into the pockets of Bill and Hill.

You might find footprints, but when it comes to the Clintons, you won't find fingerprints. That blue dress taught Bill Clinton an eternal lesson.

Hillary knew nothing about the pardons, despite the fact her husband was dealing with her brother, who was actually living at the time at the White House. They don't talk?

She could argue she doesn't speak to Bill in private since the problem over you know who.

And what if even the Vignali family name pops up on the subpoenaed list of donors to the Clinton Library Foundation in Arkansas?

Well, the family likes to read.

What about Hillary's own problems about allegations of pardons for votes in the Hasidic community of New Square in Rockland County?

How on earth do you prove what a person was thinking when they were voting and why they voted that way?

Are you going to subpoena all the 1,400 Hasidim who suddenly voted for Hillary in the Senate race and the 12 who voted for Rick Lazio?

Are you going to subpoena all the other Hasidic voters in other neighboring communities who voted overwhelmingly for Rick Lazio after they saw Hillary warmly kiss the face of Yasser Arafat's wife and called for a Palestinian state?

Well, what about Rabbi David Twersky, the head of the New Square community, who suddenly visited Bill and Hill in the White House on Dec. 12, after Hillary swept New Square and four members of the community, who stole $42 million in federal funds, got mysterious commutations soon after?

We were talking about family values, Bill and Hill could blithely respond.

Of course.

And now the other scandal, old by the standards of speed at which Pardongate is going - Marc Rich.

Response? Well, Denise Rich is rich by name and nature. She can say she loved Bill's politics and may have been infatuated (platonically, of course) with his company, seeing she visited the White House more than 100 times in one year, something some Cabinet members didn't actually do.

Well, what about that poor dope of a brother, Roger Clinton?

He told the Los Angeles Times that he was disappointed his bro did not pardon a bunch of his friends who he was lobbying for.

Why would Clinton grant those pardons?

Truth is, Roger and his friends can't rub two dimes together, so what was the use? No, Roger didn't break the law, not this time, unless you figure that as a convicted drug felon. He is guilty of his greatest asset: being an idiot.

In the end, you can question them all, the inner sanctum, Bruce Lindsey, Harold Ickes, William Cunningham, Harry "Hollywood" Thomason, Hugh Rodham, Hillary and Bill, and you might see a scandal for sure.

But not one shred of evidence that could put Bill "The Don" and Hill "The Assistant Don" in a place where crime families belong.
