Have you seen any old time rock stars live? Were you disapointed or did you think they were as good as they'd always been?

If tickets hadn't been so expensive, I would've seen U2 (who don't look old to me...) with my dad.

(grumblegrumble) $100 tickets (grumblegrumble) PJ Harvey opening act... (grumblegrumble)

It's not that U2 are old it's just that they're... they're... they're U2! and they take themselves way to seriously, not that REM aren't guilty of that, of course.

OK, the big question: REM or U2?

REM!

No, U2! Someone is going to kill me for this, but REM sound boring to me. Good songs, but always too darned nice and mellow.

Aging rock stars. Jethro Tull (dragged there by my parents), who remained quite energetic, but didn't play anything near the quality of "Songs From The Wood". The Stranglers (dropped out of university to see them), who had lost some of their quality, since their original lead singer was replaced by a total geen, and only one person threw beer at them. And Alice Cooper, who was so amazing I'm going again.

I've seen Ringo Starr (how could such a wonderful Beatle turn so...BAD?), Chicago (I almost fell asleep if that says anything), and the Rolling Stones (who were fabulous - as always!)

and i'd pick U2 over REM any day...

("Dead Poets Society"-style)
If you were to graph the greatness of each band, with socio-political importantness on the Y-axis and how artistically their songs are rendered on the X-axis, I believe U2 would be "greater".

But I still prefer REM.

For the record .... REM I pick you! And indeed I have seen old time rock singers in action! Very briefly. My dad wanted to go see Blondie in action. We were dragged along. I now hate Blondie. lots of 30 somethings bopping about waving their heads about like lunatics and still clearly fancying Debbie Harry even though she has let herself go quite drastically...

The evening before my second-to-last exam of High School, I went to see Bob Dylan. Howsat for old? He rocked my world. I've not been to any other concerts after that, due to having absolutely no money at all.

Which brings us to another BIG QUESTION of late. Are you allowed to fancy Debbie Harry 'as she was', even though now she's old and wrinkly?

-- Tim (tim@almighty.co.uk), February 27, 2001.

Didn't we go through this?

YES! YES! YES!

I mean, crikey, Tim, even *I* fancy 1980's Debbie Harry!
