Tamron/Nikon lenses and stories

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Konica 35mm SLRs : One Thread

In response to if Nikon is having someone else make thier lenses, the answer is, YES! Before I got back into the Konica stuff, I seriously considered buying the Nikon stuff, until I tried one of thier lenses. What I disaster of a lens. The Tamron lens felt ten times the better. When I asked the shop owner, he told me that the times have changed. He also used to sell Konica, until... So, anyway, he goes on to tell me that Nikon is producing two grades of lenses, one where it is supposed to be Nikon glass, but that is all, and the old "Professional" type(read EXPENSIVE). Needless to say, I decided to go with the Konica stuff, and not with the genuine imitation "NIKON" stuff out there. Well, enough of my soapbox. If you don't belive me, go out to your local camera shop, ask to see a Nikon 35-75 or so zoom. Watch trhe salesperson take one out of the box, and whern you try it, you'll be afraid that it will fall apart in your hands! Thanks, but no thanks! Jefferson

Tamron/Nikon

Hi Jefferson,

I think you make some really good points... every lens manufacturer has it's success stories and it's "less than successful". There is a great deal of behind the scenes re-labelling and swapping going on. Plus, many offer different grades of lenses (just try to figure out all the Tokina designations some time!)

So we'd better all do a lot of research (eBay & the Internet sure help), shop with care and recognize that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

Cheers!
